James Stewart

James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart (May 20, 1908  July 2, 1997) was an American actor, known for his distinctive drawl and down-to-earth persona. He starred in many films that are considered to be classics, and is known for portraying an American middle-class man struggling with a crisis.

Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition for The Philadelphia Story (1940) and receiving one Lifetime Achievement award. Stewart was named the third greatest male screen legend of the Golden Age Hollywood by the American Film Institute. He was a major Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract star. He also had a noted military career and was a World War II and Vietnam War veteran, who rose to the rank of brigadier general in the United States Air Force Reserve.

Early life and career

Stewart was born on May 20, 1908, in Indiana, Pennsylvania, the son of Elizabeth Ruth Jackson (1875–1953) and Alexander Maitland Stewart (1871–1961), who owned a hardware store. He had Irish and Scottish ancestry, and was raised as a Presbyterian. He was descended from veterans of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the American Civil War. The eldest of three children (he had two younger sisters, Virginia and Mary), he was expected to continue his father's business, which had been in the family for three generations. His mother was an excellent pianist but his father discouraged Stewart's request for lessons. When his father accepted a gift of an accordion from a guest, young Stewart quickly learned to play the instrument, which became a fixture offstage during his acting career. As the family grew, music continued to be an important part of family life.

James Stewart (South Australian politician)

James Stewart (c. 1842 – 2 March 1879) was a pastoralist and politician in the colony of South Australia.

Alexander Stewart (c. 1799 – 15 January 1883), arrived in South Australia on the Duchess of Northumberland in December 1839 with his wife, two stepsons and two stepdaughters and settled on a property on the Mosquito Plains, near Naracoorte. Nearby properties were taken up around the same time by John Stewart, for whom Stewart's Ranges near Naracoorte was named, and Charles Stewart of Avenue Plains (near Lucindale, 40km from Naracoorte). It is not certain what relation Charles and John were to Alexander. Some time before 1870 Alexander took over a cattle property "Woodlands" at Morphett Vale.

James Stewart, was born in the South East of South Australia, and grew up at "Moy Hall" on the Mosquito Plains. He was educated at Portland, Victoria, St. Peter's College, and Whinham's Grammar School in North Adelaide. He married and took over a sheep station in Victoria, which he later sold at a substantial profit, and retired to "Hackham House", Hackham, and was a member of the Adelaide Hunt Club.

James Stuart Stewart

James Stuart Stewart (21 July 1896 – 1 July 1990) was a minister of the Church of Scotland. He taught New Testament Language, Literature and Theology at the University of Edinburgh (New College).

Educated at the High School of Dundee and the University of St Andrews from 1913, he took a first in classics (MA 1917). His studies were interrupted by service in France with the Royal Engineers (1916–1918). After the war he pursued divinity at New College, Edinburgh, then a United Free Church of Scotland institution, with postgraduate work at the University of Bonn (1921–1922) and an assistantship at Barclay Church, Edinburgh. He also served as Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland from 1952–1966, later as extra chaplain, and as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1963.

He authored many books, including Heralds of God, The Strong Name, and A Man in Christ. In 1999, Preaching Magazine ranked James S. Stewart as the best preacher of the twentieth century, commenting that his books on preaching "have inspired tens of thousands of preachers to strive for greater effectiveness in their proclamation of God's Word." Stewart wrote several books on the art and craft of preaching and co-edited with H. R. Mackintosh what is still the standard English translation of Friedrich Schleiermacher's influential work, The Christian Faith.

James Stewart (mathematician)

James Drewry Stewart (March 29, 1941  December 3, 2014) was a Canadian mathematician, violinist, and the professor emeritus of mathematics at McMaster University. Stewart received his master of science at Stanford University and his doctor of philosophy from the University of Toronto in 1967. He worked for two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of London. Stewart's research focused on harmonic analysis and functional analysis.

Stewart is best-known for his series of calculus textbooks used for high school, college, and university level courses. His books are standard textbooks in universities in many countries. One of his most popular textbooks is Single Variable Essential Calculus: Early Transcendentals. In 2014, his book sales were over $26 million.

Stewart was also a violinist, a former member of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the early 2000s a house designed by Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe was constructed for Dr. Stewart in the Rosedale neighbourhood of Toronto at a cost of $32 million. He paid an additional $5.4 million for the existing house and lot which was torn down to make room for his new home. Called Integral House (a reference to its curved walls, and their similarity to the mathematical integral symbol), the house includes a concert hall that seats 150. Dr. Stewart has said, "My books and my house are my twin legacies. If I hadn't commissioned the house I'm not sure what I would have spent the money on." Glenn Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art, called the house "one of the most important private houses built in North America in a long time."
