James O'Brien (hurler)

James O'Brien (born 1983 in Bruree, County Limerick) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Bruree and has been a member of the Limerick and Kerry senior inter-county teams at various times since 2003. In 2007 he helped Tralee IT win the Ryan Cup and won a Higher Education All Star the only player outside the Fitzgibbon Cup to do so in 2007. He won a Limerick Senior Hurling Championship medal in 2006 with Bruree.

James John "Jim" O'Brien (born 28 September 1987) is a professional footballer who plays as a winger for English club Coventry City, currently on loan at Scunthorpe United.

Celtic

O'Brien made his debut in a 2–1 victory over Gretna on 7 October 2007, he filled in as a right-back due to all of Celtic's recognised players in that position being injured.

Dunfermline Athletic (loan)

O'Brien was loaned from Celtic to Dunfermline Athletic during the 2006–07 season. He made his debut in their 3–2 Scottish Cup victory over Rangers on 7 January 2007. He scored his first goal in Dunfermline's 4–1 victory over Motherwell on 7 May 2007.

Dundee United (loan)

O'Brien joined Dundee United on loan on 31 January until May 2008.

Motherwell

On 8 August 2008, O'Brien signed for Motherwell. O'Brien scored four goals in 64 league appearances for Motherwell, earning selection for the PFA Scotland team of the year in 2009–10.

Barnsley

On 7 May 2010, O'Brien signed a pre-contract agreement with English Championship side Barnsley, then under the stewardship of Mark Robins. He scored his first goal for the South Yorkshire side with a tap in during a thumping 5–2 win against rivals Leeds United at Oakwell in September 2010. Although he had quite a hard time settling at Barnsley during his first season, he gradually made himself a fans' favourite due to his tireless energy and workrate.

O'Brien (Nineteen Eighty-Four)

O'Brien (known as O'Connor in the 1956 film adaption of 1984) is a fictional character and the main antagonist in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. The protagonist Winston Smith, living in a dystopian society governed by the Party, feels strangely drawn to Inner Party member O'Brien. Orwell never reveals O'Brien's first name.

Overview

O'Brien is a member of the Inner Party and, like Winston Smith, works in the Ministry of Truth. There, he holds a senior position that is so distant that Winston has only a vague idea of its nature. Winston suspects that O'Brien secretly opposes the Party. Eventually O'Brien approaches Winston with some leading remarks which seem to confirm Winston's suspicions. Winston finds the courage to approach him candidly, declaring himself an enemy of the totalitarian state. At first, Winston's intuition seems to be correct: O'Brien presents himself as a member of the "Brotherhood" seeking to overthrow the Party and INGSOC. O'Brien invites Winston (who then invites Julia) to his flat where, as a member of the Party elite he lives in comparative luxury. There he extracts a series of pledges from the couple that they are prepared to do anything to serve the Brotherhood, except (at Julia's protest) to separate from each other.
