James Lowe (cricketer)

James Lowe (born November 4, 1982) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman, off-spin bowler and wicket-keeper who played for Durham. He was born in Bury St Edmunds.

Lowe's first-class career began following some solid performances in the Second XI in the 2002 season. Lowe made an impressive 80 before being caught lbw in his debut first-class innings the following year, a score which, for as long as he played, would remain his highest score in a First-class match.

However, Lowe played only four matches in the next three years for the first team, instead playing Second XI cricket, while in 2004 Lowe was part of the team which reached the semi-finals of the Second XI Trophy competition. During this same period Lowe represented Philadelphia in the North East Premier League, where he would play until 2006, the year in which he saw out his first-class career.

Lowe is no longer a squad-member as of the 2007 season. Throughout his short career he was an opening batsman, initially full of promise, but released before being able to get into the swing of a regular team place.

James Lowe (conductor)

James Lowe is an orchestra conductor. He will assume his role of Chief Conductor of the Prussian Chamber Orchestra from the 2015/16 season. His work as Artistic Director of the Hallé Harmony Youth Orchestra was featured in a four-part documentary shown in the UK on Channel 4 in 2010. A recipient of the Bernard Haitink Fund for Young Talent, Lowe is Principal Conductor of the Edinburgh Contemporary Music Ensemble, Principal Guest Conductor of Music for Everyone, Orchestras Advisor and conductor of the Senior Orchestra of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and held the position of Associate Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. James is also Artistic Advisor of the Nottingham Youth Orchestra, with whom he began his orchestral career.

Early life

Lowe was born in Nottingham. His first venture into the world of music was the study of the viola. He began viola lessons aged 13 and later went on to study the instrument privately with John White. He then studied music at the University of Edinburgh gaining a First Class Honours degree in music.

James Lowe (rugby union)

James Francis Rawiri Lowe (born 8 July 1992) is a New Zealand rugby union player. He plays in the wing position for the Waikato based Super Rugby side the Chiefs, and for provincial side Tasman. Lowe has played at secondary schools level for New Zealand being a part of the successful New Zealand Schools team that beat Australia in 2010. He made his debut for Tasman in 2012 and his strong performances saw him named in the Chiefs squad for the 2014 Super Rugby season.

He made his Super Rugby debut by coming on as a substitute in the Chiefs' first match of the season against the Crusaders in Christchurch. With the Chiefs leading 11–10, but the Crusaders on the attack, he scored an intercept try from within his own 22 to help the Chiefs to an 18–10 victory.

Lowe was educated at Nelson College from 2006 to 2010.

James Lowe (1796–1866) was the English inventor of a screw propeller.

Life

Lowe was apprenticed on 2 November 1813 to Edward Shorter, a master mechanic and Freeman of the City of London, who had in 1800 taken out a patent for propelling vessels, which he had named "the perpetual sculling machine". In 1816 Lowe ran away and joined a whaling ship, the Amelia Wilson, but after three voyages returned to his master.

Later Lowe went into business as mechanist and a smoke-jack maker, and experimented on screw-propellers for ships. On 24 March 1838 he took out a patent, No. 7599, for "improvements in propelling vessels" by means of one or more curved blades, set or fixed on a revolving shaft below the water-line of the vessel. His propeller was first practically used in the Wizard in 1838, and then in the steamships the Rattler and the Phœnix.

On 16 December 1844 Lowe brought an action in the Court of Queen's Bench against Penn & Co., engineers at Greenwich, for infringement of the patent. The evidence was contradictory, but it was shown that Lowe, although not the original inventor of propellers, was the inventor of a combination nor before applied to the propulsion of vessels.
