James Hunt

James Simon Wallis Hunt (29 August 1947 – 15 June 1993) was a British racing driver who won the Formula One World Championship in 1976. After retiring from racing in 1979, Hunt became a media commentator and businessman.

Beginning his racing career in touring car racing, Hunt progressed into Formula Three where he attracted the attention of the Hesketh Racing team and was soon taken under their wing. Hunt's often action-packed exploits on track earned him the nickname "Hunt the Shunt", "shunt" being a British term that means "crash". Hunt entered Formula One in 1973, driving a March 731 entered by the Hesketh Racing team. He went on to win for Hesketh, driving their own Hesketh 308 car, in both World Championship and non-Championship races, before joining the McLaren team at the end of 1975. In his first year with McLaren, Hunt won the 1976 World Drivers' Championship, and he remained with the team for a further two years, although with less success, before moving to the Wolf team in early 1979. Following a string of races in which he failed to finish, Hunt retired from driving halfway through the 1979 season.

James Hunt (judge)

Sir Patrick James Hunt (26 January 1943 – 8 November 2006) was an English barrister and High Court judge.

Hunt was born in Coalville in Leicestershire, where his father was a solicitor. He was educated at the Boys' Grammar School in Ashby de la Zouch, and read modern history at Keble College, Oxford. Studies came easily to him so he spent his energies on extracurricular activities, such as the tradition of spectacular Keble balls and training the Keble crew.

After graduating from Oxford, he joined Boots but decided that management was not for him and that he would read for the bar. He became a housemaster at his alma mater for a year while studying for the bar exams, teaching English and bringing the C stream of English into competition with the A stream, as well as controlling rowdy audience members of his Shakespeare productions by pelting them with mint imperials. He also sang with the local Gilbert & Sullivan pursuing a love of music and singing that continued throughout his life with both choral societies and jazz bands. He was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1968 and joined the Chambers at 1 King's Bench Walk after serving a pupillage there with David Smout. He practised mainly in criminal law on the Midland and Oxford Circuit, with a side line in personal injury. He was most well known for his ability to connect with a jury and see to the crux of a matter. He served as defence counsel in the Matrix Churchill case in 1992, and in the murder trial of Beverley Allitt in 1993 after which families of the victims praised his sensitive conduct of a powerful defence. He was prosecution counsel in the trial of groom Clem O'Brien for the murder of racehorse trainer Alex Scott in 1995. Such was his appeal to a jury that the police famously sought a change in the law in order to be able to appoint him to a case on the name of a victim rather than a defendant in order to ensure that he would not be against them.

James Hunt (footballer)

James Malcolm Hunt (born 12 December 1976) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder from 1994 to 2010.

He played for Notts County, Northampton Town, Oxford United, Bristol Rovers, Grimsby Town and Gainsborough Trinity.

Playing career

Notts County

He was born shortly after his namesake became Formula One World Champion in Derby. Hunt started his professional career after graduating from the youth academy at Notts County. He was promoted to the first team squad at the start of the 1994–1995 seasaon and was handed his debut by Russell Slade. During his time at Meadow Lane Hunt also played under Howard Kendall, Steve Nicol and Colin Murphy before finally being released by Sam Allardyce at the end of the 1996–1997 season. Hunt played 73 times for County in all competitions, scoring one goal in the League Cup.

Northampton Town

Ian Atkins brought Hunt to Northampton Town in the summer of 1997. Hunt did not make his debut for Town until 21 October 1997 when he came on as a 55th-minute substitute for David Rennie. During his first full season with Northampton the club secured a play-off place with the Second Division and after defeating Bristol Rovers in the semi-final the club were defeated 1–0 by Grimsby Town at Wembley Stadium.

James Hunt (Canadian politician)

James Hunt (June 22, 1835 – November 10, 1915) was a Canadian politician.

Born in England, Hunt emigrated to Lower Canada when he was two years old. Hunt as mayor of Bury, Quebec from 1892 to 1901. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for Compton in 1897. A Liberal, he did not run in 1900.

He died in Bury in 1915.

James Henry "Jim" Hunt ( also called Sham) (born July 25, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American sailor and Olympic Champion. He competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and won a gold medal in the 5.5 metre class, with the boat Minotaur. a boat his father, C Raymond Hunt,designed.

James Hunt (speech therapist)

James Hunt (1833 – 29 August 1869) was a speech therapist in London, England who had among his clients Charles Kingsley, Leo Tennyson (son of the poet laureate Alfred Tennyson) and Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Lewis Carroll was a children’s author, mathematician, and clergyman but had a severe stammer that affected his job. The 1861 census shows that Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was staying at Ore House in 1961 and being treated by Dr Hunt a psellismolligist. Since his book was published in 1865 it is quite possible that some of it was written during his stay.

His other main interest was in anthropology and in 1863 he established the Anthropological Society of London, which after his death merged with the more established Ethnological Society of London to become the Royal Anthropological Institute.

Career

James Hunt was born in Swanage, Dorset, the son of the speech therapist Thomas Hunt (1802–1851) and his wife Mary. He was trained by his father in the art of curing stuttering by means of breath exercises, muscle control and building the patient's confidence. He bought a doctorate from the University of Giessen in Germany and set up a practice in 1856 in Regent Street, London. He dedicated his first Manual on the subject to Charles Kingsley who spent three weeks with him in 1859. He moved to Hastings where ran residential courses during the summer season with his sister Elizabeth's husband, Rev. Henry F. Rivers.
