James Baker

James Addison Baker III (born April 28, 1930) is an American attorney, former governmental official and statesman.

Baker served as the White House Chief of Staff and in the Cabinets of two American presidents. During the Reagan administration he served as both Chief of Staff (1981-1985) and as Secretary of the Treasury (1985-1988), and in the George H. W. Bush administration, he served as Secretary of State (1989-1992) and as Chief of Staff (1992-1993). He is honorary chair of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Early life and education

James Addison Baker was born in Houston at 1216 Bissonnet, to James A. Baker, Jr. (1892–1973) and Ethel Bonner (née Means) Baker (August 6, 1894 – April 26, 1991). His father was a partner of Houston law firm Baker Botts. Baker has a sister, Bonner Baker Moffitt.

Baker attended The Hill School, a boarding school in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Princeton University in 1952. Afterwards, he earned a J.D. (1957) from The University of Texas at Austin, was a member of Phi Delta Theta, and began to practice law in Texas.

James Clark Baker

James Clark Baker (13 November 1866 – 1 February 1939), also known as James Clark, was a New Zealand cricketer who played first-class cricket for Otago from 1890 to 1907. In 1902 he scored Otago's first century in first-class cricket.

Cricket career

After two unsuccessful matches for Otago in 1889-90, Baker played a leading part in Otago's victory over Canterbury in 1890-91. In a match in which only 443 runs were scored, Otago needed 121 runs to win and were 32 for 7 before Baker, displaying "unsuspected virtuosity", attacked the bowling and finished on 45 not out in a one-wicket victory.

For the rest of his career he usually opened the batting. He scored his first fifty in 1894-95, when he made 80, the only fifty in the match, against Fiji. He also made the highest score of the match when he scored 53 in Otago's victory over Canterbury in 1895-96.

"A splendid batsman and a most attractive player to watch", Baker played his first match for New Zealand in 1896-97 against the Australians, when New Zealand fielded a side of 15. Later in the season he scored 36 and 19 in New Zealand's victory over Queensland. He was one of the three players who formed the selection committee on New Zealand's short tour of Australia in 1898-99, when he was the leading run-scorer in the two first-class matches (109 at 27.25) and in all matches (290 at 41.42).

James Baker (musician)

James Lawrence Baker (born 7 March 1954) is a rock musician from Perth, Western Australia. He has drummed with, and was instrumental in the founding of several influential Australian bands including The Scientists, Le Hoodoo Gurus, Beasts of Bourbon, and The Dubrovniks.

Biography

Early days

Baker has named Ronnie Bond of The Troggs as the main influence on his drumming style. He first started drumming for a local Perth band, Black Sun (1973–1974), followed by The Slick City Boys (1974–1975).

When he was 16 he travelled to the United States and England, where he was influenced by early live performances of the Ramones, Flamin' Groovies, The Dictators and Johnny Thunders. It was during these travels that he met Sid Vicious

Baker was a member in 1976 of protopunk band The Geeks, who are regarded as one of the first punk rock groups in Australia, although they played no gigs and did not release any recorded material until fairly recently. After Dave Faulkner joined, the band became known as The Victims. Baker and Faulkner co-wrote the band's first single, "Television Addict", which is widely regarded as a classic and has featured on several punk compilations.

James Baker (born 16 February 1988) is a New Zealand first-class cricketer who plays for Northern Districts.

James Baker (January 6, 1830 – July 31, 1906) was an English-born soldier and British Columbia political figure. He represented Kootenay from 1886 to 1890, East Kootenay from 1890 to 1898 and East Kootenay South from 1898 to 1900 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

He was born in London, the son of Samuel Baker, and was educated at the Collegiate School, Gloucester and at Cambridge University. In 1855, Baker married Sarah Louise White. He entered the Indian Navy in 1845, taking part in a survey of the Arabian coast and the suppression of the slave trade. Baker later joined the British Army and fought in the Crimea. In 1875, he retired at the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Baker was author of the book Turkey in Europe. He was employed for a time as the private secretary of the Duke of Westminster.

In 1885, he came with his family to British Columbia, settling first at Skookumchuck and later near the present site of Cranbrook. Baker was involved in plans to develop coal deposits in Crowsnest Pass area and later in plans to construct a railway connecting British Columbia and Alberta through the Pass. Eventually, he and his partners came to an agreement with the Canadian Pacific Railway. The choice of a route passing through Cranbrook and bypassing Fort Steele led to the development of Cranbrook as the major centre in the area. Baker served in the provincial cabinet as Provincial Secretary and Minister of Education, Immigration and Mines. In 1900, he retired to England. He died in Inglewood, Parkstone, Dorset at the age of 76.

James Baker (composer)

James Baker is an American electro-acoustic composer, percussionist and conductor.

Life and career

James Baker graduated with degrees in music from SUNY Purchase and Juilliard, where he studied percussion and conducting. He began a long time collaboration with choreographer Tere O'Connor and has composed numerous works for Tere O'Connor Dance, including Bessie Award winner Heaven Up North. He was also the composer for Like Two Kevins for the Lyon Opera Ballet. His works have been performed internationally.

Baker works as Principal Percussionist for the New York City Ballet Orchestra and serves as director of the Percussion Ensemble at the New School, Mannes College of Music. He also serves as Music Director of the Composers' Conference at Wellesley College. Baker often leads the New York New Music Ensemble and Speculum Musicae, and is resident conductor at the University at Buffalo's Center for 21st Century Music. He also appears as guest conductor with the Cygnus and Talea Ensembles.
