Jackie Blue

Jacqueline Diane "Jackie" Blue (born 1956) is a New Zealand politician and former member of Parliament for the National Party.

Personal life

Blue was born in 1956. She attended Selwyn College in Auckland, and then went on to gain a BSc from the University of Auckland in 1976 and MB ChB from Auckland Medical School in 1983. Her particular area of specialty is breast cancer, and she is a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel at the Breast Cancer Research Trust. Blue gained prominence in the medical sector as a pioneering breast physician.

Blue is married and has two children.

Political life

Blue's previous political involvement included service on a District Health Board as an elected member from the centre-right Citizens and Ratepayers Now organisation. She resigned from this shortly after being elected a National MP.

In the 2005 general election, Blue stood as the National Party's candidate in the Mt Roskill electorate. She was unsuccessful in winning the traditionally safe Labour seat from high profile Labour MP Phil Goff, but entered Parliament as a list MP, having been ranked 41st on the National Party list. In her first term as an Opposition MP, Blue had responsibilities as spokeswoman for the National Party on women's issues, as well as associate health. Subsequent to her election to Parliament, Blue strongly advocated for further available health care for sufferers of breast cancer, including wider use of the anti-cancer drug Herceptin.

Jackie Blue is a Detroit-based band that combines the elements of funk and rock music into what is termed "Funk n Roll." The band was formed in 2000 in Detroit, Michigan, United States.¹

They are widely known for their singles "Jackie" and "Detroit Queen," the later of which was nominated for "Best R&B song" in 2002 by Just Plain Folks (Grammy awards for independent artists).²

History

Formed during May 2000 in Detroit, Nailing Betty bass player Tom Libertiny and Pharmacy bass player turned guitar player Chip Thomas founded Jackie Blue. From advertisements on local websites and newspapers they hooked up with Todd Laucombe on drums and Brent McKay on lead vocals.

Jackie Blue's first CD "Behind Me" was released on 2001 April 16 after being recorded at Tom and Todd's homes. It was written musically so that each song stood on its own—A song for every day or mood. Lyrically, each of song reflects personal and political themes—From the story of a classic "lady of the night" in "Detroit Queen," to a celebration of our singer's young son in "G" (written for Gabriel), to the need to use the power of the media to help the poor and downtrodden in "Channel 5." We even wrote the "I.B. Waltz, Virginia" as a tongue-in-cheek country song for some of our southern friends (you know who you are).

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils are an American Southern rock/country rock band formed in 1972 in Springfield, Missouri, United States. They are most widely known for their singles "If You Wanna Get To Heaven" in 1974 and "Jackie Blue" in 1975.

The Daredevils are also mentioned in the "Don's Story" chapter of American humorist David Sedaris' book Barrel Fever. Bassist Michael "Supe" Granda has also written a book about the band, It Shined.

Name

According to the book, "It Shined", by Michael Granda, the band name was derived from "Cosmic Corn Cob & His Amazing Ozark Mountain Daredevils", a name that John Dillon came up with at a Kansas City "naming party" after the band was told that the name they had previously been using, "Family Tree", was already taken. The band shortened the name because none of the band members at the time wanted to be called "Cosmic Corn Cob", and they did not want the name to sound similar to the Amazing Rhythm Aces.

"Jackie Blue" is a single by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils from their 1974 album, It'll Shine When It Shines. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and #10 in South Africa in 1975. The song was sung by the group's drummer, Larry Lee.

The version appearing on the album has a running time of 4:11, while the single was edited to 3:16 with an erroneous time of 3:38. The version that appears on some later CD hit compilations is the actual 3:38 edit. In the edit, the fourth chorus and the third verse at one point and the second part of the fade at the second point were both omitted.

It was recorded by The Smashing Pumpkins in 1991 as part of the Gish recording and was later released on the compilation 20 Explosive Dynamic Super Smash Hit Explosions!. This recording later appeared in the 2012 re-release of Pisces Iscariot.

AM & Shawn Lee recorded a cover of "Jackie Blue" for their 2011 album Celestial Electric.
