Jack Whitehall

Jack Peter Benedict Whitehall (born 7 July 1988) is an English comedian, television presenter and actor.

He is best known for his stand up comedy and for starring as JP in the TV series Fresh Meat, and as Alfie Wickers in the TV series Bad Education which he also co-wrote.

As of 2012, he is a regular panellist on the game show A League of Their Own. He also hosts Backchat with his father, Michael.

Early life and education

Jack Whitehall was born on 7 July 1988 at the Portland Hospital in the City of Westminster in central London, the first child born to the actress Hilary Amanda Jane Whitehall (née Isbister, stage name Hilary Gish) and the television producer Michael John Whitehall. His father was an agent for Judi Dench, Colin Firth and Richard Griffiths, and wrote the memoir Shark-Infested Waters. Whitehall has a sister, Molly Louisa (born 1989), and a brother, Barnaby William (born 1992). He has two godfathers—Nigel Havers and Richard Griffiths, both actors.

He attended Tower House School in Barnes, west London, where he was a fellow pupil with Twilight Saga star Robert Pattinson. He has made jokes about this, often mentioning that he resented Pattinson's taking all the best acting roles in the school plays. Whitehall has also mentioned in an interview how he auditioned for the role of Harry Potter after the casting team visited his school. He went on to attend the Dragon School in Oxford and then Marlborough College, an independent school in Wiltshire.

Whitehall

Whitehall is a road in the City of Westminster, in central London, which forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from the site of the original Charing Cross at the southern end of Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. Recognised as the centre of Her Majesty's Government, the street is lined with government departments and ministries; the name "Whitehall" is thus also frequently used as a metonym for British central governmental administration, as well as being a geographic name for the surrounding area.

The name is taken from the vast Palace of Whitehall that occupied the area before its destruction by fire in 1698. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace. Trafalgar Square was built at its northern extremity in the early 19th century. The southernmost portion between Parliament Square and Downing Street is named Parliament Street. Combined, Parliament Street and Whitehall cover a distance of about 0.6 mile (1 km).

West End, Atlanta

The West End neighborhood of Atlanta is on the National Register of Historic Places and can be found southwest of Castleberry Hill, east of Westview, west of Adair Park Historic District, and just north of Oakland City. It would be difficult to find a neighborhood more closely linked to the city's, state's, region's, and nation's historical development than the West End district of Atlanta. Architectural styles within the district include Craftsman Bungalow, Queen Anne, Stick style, Folk Victorian, Colonial Revival, American Foursquare and Neoclassical Revival.

History

In this century, West End has endured many changes in its metamorphosis to an intown neighborhood while retaining its own distinctive character and vitality. This has been accomplished both by adaptation and participation in change and by its citizens' recognition of the district's special history.

Early history

Before there was a West End or an Atlanta, the area was a crossroads. Newnan Road connected the town of that name to Decatur and Lawrenceville. Crossing this road was the Sandtown Road going west to an Indian town of that name. Near this junction around 1830, Charner Humphries established an inn/tavern which came to be known as Whitehall due to the then unusual fact that it had a coat of white paint when most other buildings were of washed or natural wood.

Whitehall Street

Whitehall Street is a street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, about four blocks long. It extends from the southern end of Broadway (the street name changes at Stone Street) to the southern end of FDR Drive, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, on landfill beyond Stuyvesant's 17th-century house-site.

The street is one-way southbound for several blocks near Bowling Green until Pearl Street, and one-way northbound up from the FDR Drive near the Staten Island Ferry, also terminating at Pearl Street. The southernmost block (adjacent to the ferry terminal), provides access from FDR Drive to the Battery area.

Nearby structures

Near the foot of the street is the site of the Governor's house built by Peter Stuyvesant; when the British took over New Amsterdam from the Dutch, they christened the street and the building "Whitehall" for England's seat of government, Whitehall, London. On the Castello map (1660, illustration) Whitehall, with its white roof, stands on a jutting piece of land at Manhattan's tip, facing along the waterfront strand that extends along the East River. The only extensive pleasure gardens in seventeenth-century Nieuw Amsterdam/New York are seen to extend behind it, laid out in a patterned parterre of four squares. Other grounds in the center of blocks behind houses are commons and market gardens. The mansion is long since gone, and now the name survives only as the short north-south Whitehall Street.
