Jack Welch

John Francis "Jack" Welch, Jr. (born November 19, 1935) is a retired American business executive, author, and chemical engineer. He was chairman and CEO of General Electric between 1981 and 2001. During his tenure at GE, the company's value rose 4,000%. In 2006, Welch's net worth was estimated at $720 million. When he retired from GE he took a severance payment of $417 million, the largest such payment in history.

Early life and education

Jack Welch was born in Peabody, Massachusetts, the son of Grace (Andrews), a homemaker, and John Francis Welch, Sr, a Boston & Maine Railroad conductor. Jack is Irish American. His paternal and maternal grandparents were Irish.

Throughout his early life in middle school and high school, Jack found work in the summers as a golf caddie, newspaper delivery boy, shoe salesman, and drill press operator. Welch attended Salem High School, where he participated in baseball, football, and captained the hockey team.

Late in his senior year, Welch was accepted to University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied chemical engineering. Welch worked in chemical engineering at Sunoco and PPG Industries during his college summers. In his sophomore year, he became a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Welch graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering, turning down multiple corporate offers in order to attend graduate school at the University of Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1960 with a Master's degree and a PhD in chemical engineering.

Coaching career

Kansas Wesleyan

Welch was the 17th head football coach for the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes located in Salina, Kansas and he held that position for two seasons, from 1985 until 1986. His coaching record at Kansas Wesleyan was 8 wins, 12 losses, and 0 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2009 season, this ranks him 11th at Kansas Wesleyan in total wins and in winning percentage (.400).

The results Welch produced at Kansas Wesleyan were considered a "turnaround" because the year before his arrival, the team had winless season. At the time, the program had the nations's longest losing streak in NAIA football.

Welch's coaching career also includes stops at West Texas State University, Fort Scott Community College, and Louisiana Tech University.

Jack Welch is currently the Athletic Director and Head Football coach for Copperas Cove High School in Copperas Cove, Texas. Welch has 150 wins, 1 tie, and 51 losses since his 1994 debut at Copperas Cove. Jack Welch's accomplishments also include 12 years in the playoffs, and two appearances in the Texas 4A State Championship. Jack Welch has the most wins of any Head Coach in Copperas Cove history with victories over many of Texas' most notorious 4A and 5A power houses to include Odessa Permian and National Champion Southlake Carroll.
