Jack Webster

John Edgar "Jack" Webster, CM (April 15, 1918 – March 2, 1999) was a Scottish-born Canadian journalist, radio and television personality.

Life in the United Kingdom

Webster was born in Glasgow, the son of a Clydeside ironturner. He worked in Glasgow and on Fleet Street. When World War II broke out, Webster joined the British Army and rose to the rank of Major, with most of his six years' service in the Middle East.

Career in Canada

After the war's end, Webster emigrated to Canada. He covered the labour beat for the Vancouver Sun newspaper. In 1953, he began to work on commercial radio in the talk radio format (which had its origins in British Columbia before spreading to the US). Webster made his mark broadcasting shorthand transcripts of testimony during a probe into corruption on Vancouver's police force. His City Mike show on CJOR achieved some fame covering it.

Jack left CJOR and moved his show to CKNW. In 1963, prisoners at the BC Penitentiary were foiled in an escape attempt and took hostages. At the prisoners' request, Webster acted as a mediator between hostage-holding prisoners and the authorities and helped resolve the stand-off.

Enid Crump

Enid Crump was a character portrayed by June Broughton. She arrives on the Street to confront Betty (Betty Driver) as Betty celebrates her 90th birthday and a reporter writes an article stating that she is the oldest barmaid in the North West. That is until Enid arrives and claims her title to the throne, as she is 91.

After Enid contracts food poisoning, Betty is in great fear as Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) tells her that the hot pot, which he served her, was found at the back of the fridge, but he didn't know that it was two months old. Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) makes enquiries and finds out that Enid's illness is attributable to drinking too much, much to Betty and Steve's relief. In 2011 Betty finds out in the newspaper that Enid has died of a rare liver disease.

Jane Kenworthy

Jane Kenworthy is a character portrayed by Annie Fitzmaurice. Jane and her husband Mark greet Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale) and Gail McIntyre (Helen Worth) when the latter couple stay at a cottage in the Lake District. Later that night, Jane and Mark see Gail and Joe in a heated argument on Joe's boat. Jane and her husband go on holiday, and when they return and learn that Joe has been killed, they go to the police to tell their story. This is the last straw for the police and they arrest Gail for Joe's death. On 26 March, Gail's son David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and his friend Graeme Proctor (Craig Gazey) drive to the Lake District and pretend to be interested in purchasing the Kenworthys' boat. When Jane and Mark meet them, David reveals who he actually is and begins trying to convince them of his mother's innocence. Jane and Mark feel threatened by David and Mark calls the police.

Jack Webster (cricketer)

Jack Webster was an English cricketer active from 1938 to 1956 who played for Cambridge University immediately before the Second World War. He joined Northamptonshire after the war and played occasionally for them from 1946 to 1955. He appeared in 71 first-class matches as a right arm medium fast bowler who was a righthanded batsman. Webster was born in Tyersal, Bradford on 28 October 1917 and died in Guiting Power, Gloucestershire on 25 October 1997, three days short of his 80th birthday. He took 145 first-class wickets with a best performance of seven for 78 and he scored 617 runs with a highest score of 65, one of two half-centuries.

Jack Webster (police officer)

Jack Webster (August 1923-June 27, 2002), nicknamed Copper Jack, was a leading police officer, administrator and police historian in Toronto, Canada.

Webster was born in Toronto to an immigrant family from Scotland. At age sixteen, he lied about his age to join the Royal Canadian Engineers; he later said that he was afraid World War II would already be over if he waited until the legal age of eighteen. Webster was in the army for five years, and served in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

He joined the Toronto police force on the same day he was discharged from the army in 1945, and was assigned to a street patrol on Queen Street West. He once identified a person he had seen on his beat as escaped German prisoner of war Wolfgang Friedlander, which nearly led to Friedlander's capture in Quebec (Friedlander later turned himself in, fearing his identity would be discovered). Webster was the last constable to ride a bicycle on his beat, and was the last Toronto policeman to wear a bobby's helmet and tight-necked tunic on duty. In 1958, he was appointed to the city's newly formed Robbery Squad.
