Jack Lewis (footballer, born 1919)

John "Jack" Lewis (26 August 1919 – 2002) was an English, retired professional footballer who played as a half-back, in the Football League for Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Reading. He also played non-league football for Kettering Town.

Playing career

Lewis was born in Walsall and began his youth career with West Bromwich Albion. He signed for Crystal Palace in the 1938 close season and made his debut in April 1939 against Bristol Rovers. However that would be Lewis' only senior appearance before regular league football was interrupted by the Second World War. Lewis became a first team regular in the 1946–47 season, when he was ever-present and made over 30 appearances in each of the next two seasons. His form was such that he was named in a London select XI to play in Brussels in 1948.

However, in November 1949, Lewis was transferred to Bournemouth for £7,500 where he remained until July 1951, when he joined Reading. Lewis spent two seasons with Reading before moving into non-league football with Kettering Town.

Jack Lewis (baseball)

John David Lewis (February 14, 1884 – February 25, 1956) was a second baseman in Major League Baseball, playing in the American League with the Boston Red Sox (1911) and for the Pittsburgh Rebels of the outlaw Federal League (1914–15). Listed at 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m), 158 lb., Lewis batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In a three-season career, Lewis was a .247 hitter (169-for-684) with one home run and 80 RBI in 217 games, including 63 runs, 20 doubles, 10 triples and 18 stolen bases. In 200 fielding apeearances, he played at second base (172), shortstop (12), right field (6), first base (5) and third base (1). He committed 51 errors in 1,068 chances for a collective .952 fielding percentage.

Lewis died in Steubenville, Ohio at age 72.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
