Jack Lawrence

Jack Lawrence (April 7, 1912 – March 16, 2009) was an American songwriter. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.

Life and career

Jack Lawrence was born Jacob Louis Schwartz in Brooklyn, New York to an Orthodox Jewish family of modest means as the third of four sons. His parents Barney (Beryl) Schwartz and Fanny (Fruma) Goldman Schwartz were first cousins who had run away from their home in Belaya Tserkov (Bila Tserkva, Ukraine) to come to America in 1904.

Lawrence wrote songs while still a child, but because of parental pressure after he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, he enrolled in the First Institute of Podiatry where he received a doctoral degree in 1932. The same year, his first song was published and he immediately decided to make a career of songwriting rather than podiatry. That song, "Play, Fiddle, Play", won international fame and he became a member of ASCAP that year at age 20.

In the early 1940s, Lawrence and several fellow hit makers formed a sensational review called "Songwriters on Parade", performing all across the Eastern seaboard on the Loew's and Keith circuits.

Early life and education

Lawrence was born on January 27, 1967, in Ghent, Belgium. Prior to his adult film career, Lawrence served in the United States Army during the 1980s, receiving Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Air Assault training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was later a police officer.

Personal life

In January 2005, Lawrence married porn star Annie Cruz on the second floor of the Adam & Eve booth at the Adult Entertainment Expo, whom he later divorced in June 2006. He maintains an avid interest in law enforcement and has starred as police officers in several of his films, including a parody of Reno 911!. Lawrence was also a sponsored bicycle racer and continues to be active in racing cars and bicycles.

Jack Lawrence (born 1975 in Canterbury, Kent) is a British comics creator. Prior to 2002 he also worked as an animator.

Biography

Lawrence took a General Art and Design BTEC First Diploma at Canterbury Technical College, then went on to the KIAD at Canterbury to study for a BTEC National in the same subject. After becoming disenfranchised with art education, he then worked "regular" jobs to train himself in the field he wanted to be in. In 2000, he became a character animator for the UK-based Web design company Lightmaker. He worked there for three years before becoming a freelance artist.

Lawrence came onto the comics scene with his own title, Darkham Vale, which he created, wrote, pencilled, inked and coloured. The series ran for a self-contained ten issues, which received acclaim, especially for a new creator and a small publisher.

He went on to find success with Lions, Tigers and Bears, written by Mike Bullock and published by Image. A four-issue series, Lions, Tigers and Bears, was a surprise hit that revolved around a young boy and his stuffed animals.

"Little" Jack Lawrence (born December 18, 1976) is an American musician from Covington, Kentucky, currently living in Nashville, Tennessee.

Career

Lawrence currently plays bass guitar in The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes, The Dead Weather and City and Colour as well as the autoharp and banjo in Blanche. He also guested on the theme song to the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace entitled "Another Way To Die", playing bass guitar and baritone guitar. On May 22, 2009, Lawrence married photographer Jo McCaughey at Jack White's house in Nashville in a double ceremony with Meg White and Jackson Smith. Most recently, Lawrence contributed to the soundtrack of the Spike Jonze film Where the Wild Things Are. He is uncredited but is one of the members of Karen O's backup band for the album, Karen O and the Kids. He is also credited on four songs from Wanda Jackson's album, The Party Ain't Over, which Jack White produced. He also plays bass on one track on White's album Blunderbuss. Lawrence is currently on tour with City and Colour.

Jack Lawrence was born John Fortune Lawrence in Dublin, Ireland on 9 September 1904. A right-handed batsman, he played one first-class cricket match for Dublin University against Northamptonshire in June 1926. Lawrence died on 13 August 1984, in Eastbourne, Sussex, England.
