Jack Hawkins

John Edward "Jack" Hawkins, CBE (14 September 1910 – 18 July 1973) was an English actor who worked on stage and in film from the 1930s until the 1970s.

Career

He was born at Lyndhurst Road, Wood Green, now in Haringey, London, the son of a builder. He was educated at Wood Green’s Trinity County Grammar School, where, aged eight he joined the school choir,. By the age of ten Hawkins had joined the local operatic society, and made his stage debut in Patience by Gilbert and Sullivan. His parents enrolled him in the Italia Conti Academy and whilst he was studying there he made his London stage debut, when aged eleven, playing the Elf King in Where the Rainbow Ends at the Holborn Empire on Boxing Day, December 1923, a production that also included the young Noël Coward. He appeared on Broadway in Journey's End by the age of 18. Although he appeared in several films during the 1930s, it was only after service in World War II, during which he had become a colonel in ENSA for India and Southeast Asia, that he began to build a successful career in the cinema.

Jack Hawkins (politician)

Walter John "Jack" Hawkins (born May 5, 1932) is an author and former politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Hants East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1970 to 1978, from 1981 to 1984 and from 1988 to 1993 as a Liberal member.

He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and educated at Saint Mary's University and the University of New Brunswick. He served in the Canadian Army from 1955 to 1960, reaching the rank of lieutenant. Hawkins was an English professor at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and St. Mary's University. He served in the province's Executive Council as Minister of Agriculture from 1972 to 1978 and as Minister of the Environment from 1975 to 1976. Hawkins also served as chair of the Nova Scotia Treasury Board from 1975 to 1978 and Chair of the Liberal caucus from 1981 to 1983.

Jack Hawkins (U.S. Marine Corps officer)

Jack L. Hawkins (October 25, 1916, Roxton, Texas - May 17, 2013 in Fredericksburg, Virginia) was a United States Marines Corps Colonel employed by the CIA for the military planning, training of Cuban exiles, and the effective military command of forces in the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba in April 1961. Hawkins was known by the alias John Haskins.

Biography

Jack Hawkins graduated as a second lieutenant from the United States Naval Academy. In 1939, he attended the Marine Corps Basic School for officers, and then served with the Fourth Marines in Shanghai and in the Philippines when the regiment was transferred there in late 1941.

World War II

During World War II, he saw service in the Philippines at the Battle of Bataan and was taken prisoner by Japanese armed forces after the Battle of Corregidor. Initially sent to a prison camp on Luzon, he was later transferred to another prison camp on Mindanao where conditions were somewhat better. The new prison camp was actually a pre-war convict facility on a plantation. Eventually, he and two other POWs, one of whom was William Dyess, planned an escape. However, the need for additional expertise in their post-escape plans brought the total number of Americans in the group to ten, including Samuel Grashio and Austin Shofner. Then they enlisted the help of two Filipinos who had been imprisoned before the war as convicts to serve as guides. The escape was successful and the two Filipinos eventually received pardons for their assistance.
