Jack Daugherty (musician)

Jack Daugherty (August 13, 1930 - February 2, 1991) was a musician and producer who is best known for being the music producer of the band The Carpenters.

Early work

For most of his early professional career, Daugherty had worked as a trumpeter in Woody Herman's band. By the 1960s, he had all but retired from the music business, working in public relations at North American Aviation, an aircraft company with a location operating in the Los Angeles area. He went on to produce three albums: Jack Daugherty and the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy One (referred to by Sounds as "a supersession of the finest studio musicians in Hollywood"), on A&M Records, Carmel by the Sea, on the Monterey Label, and Romance, on Columbia Records, Japan, as his last known project.

The Carpenters

Though no longer actively involved in music, Daugherty still kept an open network with other performers throughout the years. One was John Pisano, guitarist of Herb Alpert's band The Tijuana Brass, and still a part of the A&M Records roster. Daugherty is credited with getting a demo tape of Karen and Richard Carpenter's work to Herb Alpert through Pisano.

Jack Daugherty (baseball)

John Michael "Jack" Daugherty (born July 3, 1960 in Hialeah, Florida) was a major league first baseman and outfielder for parts of seven seasons with the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds and Montreal Expos.

Amateur background

Daugherty played high school baseball at the same school that produced Detroit Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell (Kearny High School) in San Diego, California. At the collegiate level he played for the University of Arizona, and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Oakland Athletics on October 9, 1982.

Minors & Independent League

Daugherty was released by the A's in January 1984 after only one season in their farm system. He played the 1984 season for the independent Helena Gold Sox of the Pioneer Baseball League before signing with the Montreal Expos in December.

Montreal Expos

Daugherty made his major league debut in 1987 as a first baseman with the Montreal Expos. He was 1 for 10 in 11 games with his only hit coming against Greg Maddux. After spending the entire 1988 season in the minors, batting .285 for the Indianapolis Indians, he was sent to the Texas Rangers to complete an earlier deal in which the Rangers sent Tom O'Malley to the Expos for a player to be named later.
