Jack Chambers (linguist)

J. K. "Jack" Chambers (born 12 July 1938 in Grimsby, Ontario) is a Canadian linguist, and a well-known expert on language variation and change, who pioneered research on Canadian English and coined the term "Canadian raising." He has been a professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto since receiving his a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in 1970. He has also been a visiting professor at many universities worldwide, including Hong Kong University, University of Szeged, Hungary, University of Kiel in Germany, Canterbury University in New Zealand, the University of Reading and the University of York in the UK. He is the author of the website Dialect Topography, which compiles information about dialectal variation in the Golden Horseshoe region of the US/Canada.

Chambers has also written extensively on jazz, including such figures as Miles Davis and Duke Ellington.

Jack Chambers (choreographer)

Jack Chambers (born 10 October 1988) is a dancer, singer, actor and choreographer, from Brisbane, Australia. He is best known for winning the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2008.

Early life

Chambers started dance lessons at Brisbane's Julie-Ann Lucas School of Dance at the age of three and continued there until he was 17. He combined this training with acting and singing studies.

Career

Chambers career took off at the age of 10 when he was cast in his first professional musical, the stage production of The Sound of Music, playing Kurt Von Trapp at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane. He then ventured into video and television and was cast in a role for Japanese Children's Television. Prior to his professional work in theatre, he was part of the amateur theatre community in Brisbane from the age of ten, working with companies such as Ocean Theatre Company, Queensland Musical Theatre and Harvest Rain Theatre Company.

In 2005, he collaborated with a friend within Harvest Rain Theatre Company, and devised an abstract production called Big Black Box, which earned him the "Young Star Award". From the age of 15, Chambers started performing with the male tap group Raw Metal which years later became family dance company, Raw Dance Company. In 2007 he choreographed and performed in Raw Dance Company's Production Project X at the Holland Dance Festival in Den Haag and The Singapore Arts Festival.

Jack Chambers (footballer)

John "Jack" Chambers (6 December 1901 – 1 July 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was inducted into the Geelong Hall of Fame in 2011.

A strong marking ruckman, Chambers was cleared to Geelong in 1924, having been on Essendon's list.

He was a half forward flanker in the Geelong team which won the 1925 VFL Grand Final, their first ever premiership.

In 1926 he represented Victoria in an interstate match against Western Australia in Perth.

Chambers kicked a career best 28 goals in 1928, from 18 games, to finish as Geelong's leading goal-kicker.

He had a son, John Chambers, who played Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria as a batsman.

John "Jack" Chambers (March 25, 1931–April 13, 1978) was a Canadian artist and filmmaker. Born in London, Ontario, Chambers' painting style shifted from surrealist-influenced to photo-realist-influenced. He used the term “Perceptual Realism” and later “perceptualism” to describe his style. He began working with film in the 1960s, completing six by 1970. Stan Brakhage proclaimed Chambers' The Hart of London as "one of the greatest films ever made."

Biography

Chambers spent eight years (1953–1961) studying and working in Europe after studying at H.B. Beal Secondary School and the University of Western Ontario. While in Europe he met Pablo Picasso, who suggested he continue his studies in Barcelona. He called his own work "perceptual realism," a kind of surrealism based on his own dreams and memories and the existentialist philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. When he returned to London Chambers worked with fellow London native Greg Curnoe. In 1969 he was diagnosed with leukemia. For the rest of his life he painted more realistically, often depicting sites in London and the surrounding area. An example of this is 401 Towards London No. 1 (1968–1969), a view of Highway 401 heading westward towards London.
