Henry Walters

Henry Walters (September 26, 1848–November 30, 1931) was noted as an art collector and philanthropist, a founder of the Walters Art Gallery (now the Walters Art Museum) in Baltimore, Maryland, which he donated to the city in his 1931 will for the benefit of the public. From the late 19th Century, Walters lived most of the time in New York City, where from 1903 on, he served on the executive committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue. He was selected as second vice president in 1913, a position he held until his death.

Like his father William Thompson Walters, (1820-1894), he was a businessman in the railroad industry, serving as president of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (1894-1902), which had been established by his father.

Biography

Henry Walters was born in 1848 to William Thompson Walters, (1820-1894), a businessman who later founded the southeastern railroad line, Atlantic Coast Line Company. Henry graduated from Georgetown University in 1869. He did graduate work in the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard University from 1869–72.

Henry Walters (cricketer)

Henry Walters (6 November 1917 — 25 August 1944) was a New Zealand cricketer. He was a left-handed batsman who played for Auckland. He was born in Auckland and died in the English Channel.

Walters made a single first-class appearance for the team, during the 1941-42 season, against Wellington. From the opening order, he scored 81 runs in the first innings in which he batted, and 39 runs in the second, as Auckland won the match by a comfortable margin.

Henry Walters (public servant)

Henry Latimer Walters ISO (24 January 1868 – 17 March 1929) was a senior Australian public servant, best known for his time as head of the Department of Works and Railways.

Life and career

Walters was born in Newcastle, New South Wales on 24 January 1868.

Shortly after Federation, in 1902, he joined the Commonwealth Public Service as an accountant.

Between 1926 and his death in 1929, Walters was Secretary of the Department of Works and Railways.

Walters died at his home on Tennyson Street in St Kilda, Melbourne on 17 March 1929 after 18 months of illness. He was buried in Cheltonham cemetery.

Awards

Walters was made a Companion of the Imperial Service Order for his services as Secretary of the Commonwealth Works Department in June 1928.

J. Henry Walters

John Henry Walters (January 23, 1874 – January 28, 1952) was an American lawyer and politician. He was President pro tempore of the New York State Senate from 1919 to 1920.

Life

He was born on January 23, 1874, in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1890.

He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Onondaga Co., 3rd D.) in 1908, 1909 and 1910.

He was a member of the New York State Senate (38th D.) from 1911 to 1920, sitting in the 134th, 135th, 136th, 137th, 138th, 139th, 140th, 141st, 142nd and 143rd New York State Legislatures; and was President pro tempore from 1919 to 1920.

He died on January 28, 1952, in New York City.

Honors

Walters Hall at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse, New York, is named after him.
