I'm Coming Out

"I'm Coming Out" is a song made popular by American singer Diana Ross. It was written and produced by Chic members Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, and released in August 22, 1980, as the second single from Ross' self-titled tenth studio album Diana (1980).

Background

In 1979, Ross commissioned Chic founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to create material for a new album after taking her daughters to see the band in concert, following the success of Ross's final Ashford & Simpson-composed and produced LP, The Boss. Rodgers got the idea for "I'm Coming Out" after noticing three different drag queens dressed as Diana Ross at a New York club called the GG Barnum Room. The lyrics hold an additional meaning to Ross, as she was leaving Motown Records and "coming out" from under Berry Gordy's thumb.

Chart success and cultural impact

The song was a hit, peaking at number five on the U.S. Pop Singles chart. It is also notable for being the first song usually performed at Ross' performances and concerts since 1980. The song has also been identified as an unofficial gay-pride anthem.

I'm Coming Out (Ugly Betty)

"I'm Coming Out" is the 14th episode from the dramedy series Ugly Betty, which aired February 1, 2007. The episode's title comes from the 1980 Diana Ross song of the same name. It was written by James D. Parriott and directed by Wendey Stanzler.

Plot

It's Fashion Week in New York and Betty is hustling to ensure "MODE's" runway show goes off without a hitch. But to Betty's dismay, Daniel offers a now-unemployed Hilda a job helping out with the show. Betty is not too happy working alongside her sister because Hilda has taken the spotlight away from Betty. Because of their previous experiences which resulted in Betty losing jobs when they were working together, Betty tries to keep Hilda out of sight by giving her jobs where she won't be seen. However, those attempts fail miserably. On top of that, Justin wants to tag along to the event too.

At the event Henry tells Betty about the message he left with Hilda—which Betty never received—and the tensions escalate between the sisters. As Betty sees Hilda working as a hairstylist, a war of words ensues. Betty then fires her sister after a hairspray fiasco and later sees Hilda kissing Daniel. When Betty tells her the reason that she didn't want Hilda working with her, Hilda assures her that she's not interested in stealing her sister's spotlight and offers an apology for not telling Betty about the phone call. She explains that she was just trying to protect Betty but realizes Betty can take care of herself. Betty in turn tells Hilda that she might have a future in Cosmetology.

Coming out

Coming out of the closet, or simply coming out, is a figure of speech for lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, and asexual (LGBTQ+) people's self-disclosure of their sexual orientation (or lack thereof) and/or gender identity.

"I'm Coming" is a Korean-language song, and the first single from the album Rain's World, by Korean singer Rain. The single was released in early October 2006 to Korean radio, and was an instant hit. The single also features Korean rapper Tablo of Epik High.

Name of song

The song begins: "Ajigdo naleul umjig-ineun him-eun" (아직도 나를 움직이는 힘은, still power is moving me) then continues till the refrain beginning "Rain is coming down" in English. The title phrase "I'm coming" does not appear in the lyrics.

An English version is said to exist.

Music video

The music video begins with Rain in a room with a light representing the sun rising. Then he is shown coming down a helicopter with wings and looking around. The atmosphere suggests a war has just happened so he has a very pained face. The scene changes and he is walking to a clearing in the wreckage without wings and soldiers are coming out of the rubble. The rest is a dance interlude.

"I'm Coming (Tarzan Part 2)" is a 2012 promotional single released by singer-songwriter and rapper Dappy from his debut studio album Bad Intentions (2012). The song was produced by S-X and written by Dappy. The promotional track was digitally released worldwide by Takeover Entertainment on 5 August 2012 and charted at number 35 on the UK Singles Chart in its first week of release on 14 July 2012. Upon release the song sparked much controversy and was challenged by critics for its provocative and explicit themes.

Background

"I'm Coming (Tarzan Part 2)" is the sequel to Dappy's freestyle song over "Racks" by YC, titled "Tarzan Freestyle" and was released on 16 August 2011 via SB.TV as a music video. The song accumulated over 1 million views and popularised over the web, resulting into Dappy composing a sequel. "I'm Coming" contains original production by S-X, while lyrically the song mentions many British stars; Wiley, Tinie Tempah, Kelly Rowland and targeting rappers Scorcher and Bashy, along with Dappy replying to Simon Cowell concerning comments about himself. Cowell is further mocked, as is The X Factor and former contestants Joe McElderry and Alexandra Burke.
