Ivy is an American indie pop band composed of a trio of musicians: Andy Chase, Dominique Durand and Adam Schlesinger.

History

Lately and Realistic

Ivy was formed in 1994 when multi-instrumentalists Chase and Schlesinger convinced Parisian-born Durand, who had never sung in a group before, to venture into a New York studio and record a four-song tape with them. Durand, who moved to New York City from Paris in 1990, first met Chase at a party, where he was playing with his previous band. She told him that his band was "not [her] cup of tea". Three years later, Chase and Durand wrote a song, and asked Schlesinger to play bass on the demo. Schlesinger persuaded Chase and Durand to write more together, which eventually resulted in a five-song demo.

One of the first songs they recorded, "Get Enough", was released as a 7" single and was quickly named "Single of the Week" in the UK's Melody Maker.

A follow-up EP, Lately, was released on the Seed label in 1994, followed on February 14, 1995 by their debut full-length, Realistic. Although raw compared to their later work, the album hinted at the melodic sophistication and emphasis on production detail that would follow. During this period the group began touring, sharing the stage with Oasis, Edwyn Collins, Lloyd Cole, St. Etienne, Madder Rose, Yo La Tengo, The Divine Comedy and many others.

+/- (band)

+/-, or Plus/Minus, is an American indietronic band formed in 2001. The band makes use of both electronic and traditional instruments, and has sought to use electronics to recreate traditional indie rock song forms and instrumental structures. The group has released two albums on each of the American indie labels Teenbeat Records and Absolutely Kosher, and their track "All I do" was prominently featured in the soundtrack for the major film Wicker Park. The group has developed a devoted following in Japan and Taiwan, and has toured there frequently. Although many artists append bonus tracks onto the end of Japanese album releases to discourage purchasers from buying cheaper US import versions, the overseas versions of +/- albums are usually quite different from the US versions - tracklists can be rearranged, artwork with noticeable changes is used, and tracks from the US version can be replaced as well as augmented by bonus tracks.

!!! is a dance-punk band that formed in Sacramento, California, in 1996 by lead singer Nic Offer. Its name is most commonly pronounced "Chk Chk Chk" ([/tʃk.tʃk.tʃk/]). Members of !!! came from other local bands such as The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. They are currently based in New York City, Sacramento, and Portland, Oregon. The band's sixth full-length album, As If, was released in October 2015.

Background and history

!!! is an American band formed in the summer of 1995 by the merger of part of the group Black Liquorice and Popesmashers. After a successful joint tour, these two teams decided to mix the disco-funk with more aggressive sounds and integrate the hardcore singer Nic Offer from the The Yah Mos. The band's name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the clicking sounds of the Bushmens' Khoisan language were represented as "!". However, as the bandmembers themselves say, !!! is pronounced by repeating thrice any monosyllabic sound. "Chk Chk Chk" is the most common pronunciation, which the URL of their official website and the title of their Myspace page suggest is the preferred pronunciation.

Hedera

Hedera, commonly called ivy (plural ivies), is a genus of 12–15 species of evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plants in the family Araliaceae, native to western, central and southern Europe, Macaronesia, northwestern Africa and across central-southern Asia east to Japan and Taiwan.

Description

On level ground they remain creeping, not exceeding 5–20 cm height, but on suitable surfaces for climbing, including trees, natural rock outcrops or man-made structures such as quarry rock faces or built masonry and wooden structures, they can climb to at least 30 m above the ground. Ivies have two leaf types, with palmately lobed juvenile leaves on creeping and climbing stems and unlobed cordate adult leaves on fertile flowering stems exposed to full sun, usually high in the crowns of trees or the tops of rock faces, from 2 m or more above ground. The juvenile and adult shoots also differ, the former being slender, flexible and scrambling or climbing with small aerial roots to affix the shoot to the substrate (rock or tree bark), the latter thicker, self-supporting and without roots. The flowers are greenish-yellow with five small petals; they are produced in umbels in autumn to early winter and are very rich in nectar. The fruit is a greenish-black, dark purple or (rarely) yellow berry 5–10 mm diameter with one to five seeds, ripening in late winter to mid-spring. The seeds are dispersed by birds which eat the berries.

Ivy (1947 film)

Ivy is a 1947 American crime film noir directed by Sam Wood and written by Charles Bennett, based on The Story of Ivy, the novel written by Marie Belloc Lowndes. The drama features Joan Fontaine, Patric Knowles and Herbert Marshall. The film was entered into the 1947 Cannes Film Festival.

Plot

Ivy Lexton (Joan Fontaine) is a woman with a hunger to seduce men. Though she already has a husband, Jervis (Richard Ney), and is having an affair with Dr. Roger Gretorex (Patric Knowles), Ivy becomes obsessed with wealthy Miles Rushworth (Herbert Marshall), and is determined to have him.

However, Miles shows no interest because she's a married woman, which angers Lexton. Bored with her monotonous marriage, Ivy plans on poisoning her husband then pinning the blame on Roger so she may run off with Miles. Inspector Orpington (Cedric Hardwicke) is called to investigate Jervis' mysterious death.
