Isha Home School

Isha Home School (also known as IHS) is a residential school situated at the Isha Yoga Center near Coimbatore and founded in 2005 by Sadhguru, India. Children are divided amongst the four houses, Chola, Hoysala, Kakatiya and Maratha named after ancient empires of the Deccan Plateau in India.

Residential arrangement

Depending on their age, students at the Isha Home School fall into one of three sections - junior school, middle school and senior school. Junior and middle school students up to grade 7, reside in a home-like atmosphere with the children living in "houses" with "house parents" and housemates of various ages. The houses are designed to recreate the atmosphere of the home with classes being conducted mainly within the premises of the house itself(only till middle school). The senior school students reside in dormitory-style boarding.

Teaching methods

At the junior and middle school levels, the school implements a synthesis of the Montessori method of teaching and a more typical teacher-student method of education. Children are encouraged to experiment and explore various subjects and develop an interest in them with teachers and house parents playing the roles of guides and mentors. The senior school from grade 9 onwards, follows a more typical classroom teaching method. At the senior school level, the school follows the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) board of education at grade 10 and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) at grade 12. Emphasis is placed on learning outside the textbook. Innovative methods of education such as teaching mathematics using origami are combined with field trips to facilitate learning. Frequent workshops are also conducted on performance arts such as pottery and dramatics with experts from various fields such as Shobha Viswanath, Creative Director of Karadi Tales, Velu Saravanan,Prahlad Kakkar and Shekhar Kapur sharing their expertise with the students.

Homeschooling

Homeschooling, also known as home education, is the education of children inside the home, as opposed to in the formal settings of a public or private school. Home education is usually conducted by a parent or tutor. Many families that start out with a formal school structure at home often switch to less formal and, often, more effective ways of imparting education outside of school. "Homeschooling" is the term commonly used in North America, whereas "home education" is more commonly used in the United Kingdom, elsewhere in Europe, and in many Commonwealth countries.

Prior to the introduction of compulsory school attendance laws, most childhood education was imparted by the family or community. In several countries homeschooling in the modern sense is considered to be an alternative to attending public or private schools, and is a legal option for parents. In other countries homeschooling is considered illegal or restricted to specific conditions, as noted in the Homeschooling international status and statistics. According to the US National Household Education Surveys, about three percent of all children in the US were homeschooled in the 2011 and 2012 school year. The studies found that of these children, 83 percent were White, 5 percent were Black, 7 percent were Hispanic, and 2 percent were Asian or Pacific Islander.

Home School (novel)

Home School is a novel by Charles Webb that is the sequel to The Graduate. It was published by Random House in the United Kingdom in 2007.

Background

In the 1970s, Webb himself had fought to have his boys homeschooled. The sequel was written about 40 years after the original book.

Webb completed writing the book around January 2005. Originally he stated that he would not have the entire book published while he remains alive, because Canal Plus would have published an unauthorized sequel to the book.

However Webb arranged to have the book published after his financial situation had deteriorated; his family was facing the threat of eviction. Due to the situation, he could not continue negotiations over the book.

Random House published it in the United Kingdom. The book deal was worth £30,000 (US$56,000, €44,000). As part of the deal Random House was going to negotiate the sale of United States rights and other non-UK rights of the book. Due to the deal, Webb paid a French lawyer to check if he could retrieve the publishing rights.
