Irony

Irony (from Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία (eirōneía), meaning "dissimulation, feigned ignorance"), in its broadest sense, is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or event in which what appears, on the surface, to be the case, differs radically from what is actually the case. Irony may be divided into categories such as verbal, dramatic, and situational.

Verbal, dramatic, and situational irony are often used for emphasis in the assertion of a truth. The ironic form of simile, used in sarcasm, and some forms of litotes can emphasize one's meaning by the deliberate use of language which states the opposite of the truth, denies the contrary of the truth, or drastically and obviously understates a factual connection.

Other forms, as identified by historian Connop Thirlwall, include dialectic and practical irony.

Definitions

Henry Watson Fowler, in The King's English, says "any definition of irony—though hundreds might be given, and very few of them would be accepted—must include this, that the surface meaning and the underlying meaning of what is said are not the same." Also, Eric Partridge, in Usage and Abusage, writes that "Irony consists in stating the contrary of what is meant."

Irony (framework)

Irony is a parser generator framework for language implementation on the .NET platform. Unlike most existing yacc/lex-style solutions, it does not employ code generation of a scanner/parser from grammars written in an external DSL. The grammars for the target language are coded directly in C# instead. The framework implements a LALR(1) parser.

Design

Terminal and nonterminal symbols and production rules are defined in an object oriented flavor of the EBNF using operator overloading. The framework allows for the generation of an abstract syntax tree which can be traversed using the visitor pattern or evaluated using an interpreter.

  • Irony (Wonder Girls song)

The Wonder Begins is the debut single by the South Korean girl group Wonder Girls, produced by Park Jin-young. It was released on February 13, 2007 by JYP Entertainment. It is also known by "Irony" which is the title song with the other name from this record. Three tracks, including "Bad Boy", "It's Not Love", and a remix version of "Irony" were on the EP. "It's Not Love" was a reissued single two months later on April 27, 2007.

    Critical reception

Popular music critics of Korean web magazine IZM, Jeong Seong-Ha (Hangul: 정성하), Han Dong-Yoon (Hangul: 한동윤), Yoon Jee-Hoon (Hangul: 윤지훈), said the routine of producer Jin-young's African American music style, and the tasteless song about "Irony" in common. In spite of pointing out like this, the song had a moderate chart performance.

    Music video

A music video was produced for "Irony" to promote the song. Wonder Girls showed the first live performance of "Irony" at the MBC TV series Music Core on February 10, 2007.

    Synopsis

Video begins by showing Yeeun lying on the floor and phoning, Hyuna with the dog, Sunmi putting make-up and Sohee in the bed listening to music. Then Sunye, who is sad, enters the house. Girls sit around her and Sunye starts singing about problems with her boyfriend who is cheating on her. Sunmi then locates him and Hyuna uses a voodoo doll to embarrass him in front of his new girlfriend. Girls later enter the club in which he is with his friends and face them. Sunye them blows him away and he falls down the wall. Video ends by girls laughing at him and walking away.

    Irony

    by: Jonny Diaz

always liked grass to be green, but I just can't take the
    rain it seems sometimes
And that's how it is with You and me, I hate the very
    things I need sometimes
It's like a thousand pounds of irony come crashing down
on top of me the day I learned what it means to be free/
A heart that is enslaved to You, two feet that remain
chained to You and follow You wherever You may lead/
Oh, and then You'll see a heart that's free
Well it might just be stupidity, but I know my pride can
    swallow me sometimes
And I know You know much more than me, but I forget that
    fact so easily sometimes
Oh, but now I see Your plans for me
Oh, and now I know the grand scheme
Just 'cause I want it doesn't mean I need it 'cause I
know You've got the best for me
I may not know what, I may not see it, but help me see
    You through the irony
Lord, give to me, oh, a heart that's free
    Chain me now to You
Lord, give to me, oh, a heart that's free
