Irene Manning

Irene Manning (July 17, 1912 – May 28, 2004) was an American actress and singer.

Biography

Manning was born Inez Harvuot on July 17, 1912 in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a family of five siblings. Both of her parents were singers. Her family loved to go on outdoor picnics where the featured activity was group singing. This family environment helped Irene to develop a keen interest in singing at a very early age. Her sisters later complained that little Irene would sing in her sleep, keeping them awake. Manning trained as an opera singer at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.

While performing with an all-girl USO show in England, Irene was asked to perform with bandleader Glenn Miller shortly before his death in 1944. Miller was involved in making swing records to be broadcast into Nazi Germany as part of the American Broadcasting System in Europe. Because she had been a light opera star prior to World War II and was fluent in singing in German, she was asked to sing some American pop tunes which had been translated into German vocals. Her sides were some of the last records made by Glenn Miller, prior to his being lost on an ill-fated flight to Paris over the English Channel in December 1944.

Irene Manning (also known as Lord and Clayton) is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live.

Casting and appearances

The character first appears in the episode dated May 27, 1978 originated by the actress Kate McKeown. In 1985, Andrea Evans (Tina) portrayed her in flashbacks. Actress Diana Lamar appeared in flashbacks as Irene in 1994. Actress Barbara Rhoades appeared as a back-from-the-dead Irene on the episode dated August 9, 2011, last appearing in a vision November 10, 2011.

Storylines

1978, 1980–81

Irene Manning Clayton (Kate McKeown) is introduced on-screen in fictional Llanview, Pennsylvania on the episode first-run May 27, 1978. The former best friend and college roommate of central heroine Victoria Lord (Erika Slezak), she arrives asking Viki to permanently adopt her 16-year-old daughter, Tina Clayton (Andrea Evans), as she is ostensibly dying from terminal cancer. Soon on her deathbed, Viki promises Irene to take care of Tina, and Irene apparently succumbs to the illness on-screen in July 1978. Soon later, her legal widower Ted Clayton arrives in Llanview in 1980 hoping to con assumed daughter Tina and her adoptive mother Viki out a portion of the Lord family fortune. When Ted's plans are foiled by Tina, he goes on a killing spree, murdering Vinny Wolek before he-himself is killed by police officer Ed Hall (Al Freeman, Jr.) in 1981.
