Io canto is the ninth studio album by Italian singer–songwriter Laura Pausini, released by Warner Music on 10 November 2006. On 14 November, Warner Music released Io canto's Spanish language edition, Yo canto, for the hispanophone market. Yo canto–Io canto is a limited-edition double album featuring both the Italian– and Spanish-language editions. This marks the first instance in Pausini's multilingual music career in which both editions are offered in a single release. Warner Music issued a third edition pressed exclusively for the French market. This pressing of Io canto features the bonus track "Je chante", a partial French adaptation of the Italian "Io canto".
The album consists entirely of covers. Its repertoire spans three decades of Italian pop music history. Pausini pays homage to fellow Italian singer–songwriters whose lyrical work have influenced her artistic sensibility throughout the years. In the album's liner notes Pausini reveals:
Yo canto features "Dispárame, dispara", also known as "Corazón roto"—opening theme of the Mexican telenovela Amar sin límites (2006). Chile's Canal 13 employed the album's title track for its television series Cantando por un sueño. The album won the Latin Grammy in 2007 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album.
"Io canto" is a song written by Riccardo Cocciante and Marco Luberti. Originally released in 1979 by Cocciante as the leas single for his album …E io canto, the song became a hit in Italy and during the following years, it became an Italian standard.
In 2006, the song received new attention, following the release of a cover recorded by Italian singer Laura Pausini. Her version of the song was chosen as the first single from her album Io canto and charted across Europe, also reaching the top spot on the Italian Singles Chart.
The original version of the song was recorded by Italian singer Riccardo Cocciante and released in January 1979 as a single from his studio album …E io canto, released during the same year. Cocciante, composer of the music, also arranged the song, while lyricist Marco Luberti was also credited as its producer.
A French-language version of the song, titled "Je chante" was released by Cocciante himself. He also recorded a Spanish-language version of the song, under the name "Yo canto", while an English-language adaptation of "Io canto", written in 1979 and titled "I'm singing", was released for the first time in 2009 only, as a track of Cocciante's album Fable.
Check one, two
The plow that broke the plains
We as humans destroy everything,
well, there's limits to the land
Left the resistance and the monkey wrenchin' cause money rules again
Life is easier when your bills are paid,
you finished studies,
Masters degree
Now consulting development companies,
who sold out now?
Who sold out now?
Sixteen years old and live at home
In front your friends calling out at shows,
you left the scene cause your new girlfriend told you so,
freaked out on X at some rave or techno,
money rules again
Distro circus at every show,
I came to support these tourin' bands and nothing's free,
pay my ticket at the door,
who sold out now?
Who sold out now?
Constant complaining makes my ears ring
I care about hardcore but I hate the scene
The plow that broke the plains
We as humans abuse every way,
there's limits to me, friend
What happened to the brotherhood we shared,
well, money rules again
I'll give you anything if you just ask,
hung yourself from your own rope
I count my loss and just walk away,
who sold out now?
