Hybrid Theory (EP)

Hybrid Theory is the first EP by Hybrid Theory, a previous name of the band Linkin Park. The album was recorded and self-released in May 1, 1999 through Mix Media. Later that year, the band changed its name to Linkin Park and Hybrid Theory was re-mixed and remastered for another limited release in 2001 (with minor changes) in the credits and artwork for members of Linkin Park's fan club. Only about 1,000 copies were pressed and released. Original versions of the EP are hard to find.

Background

The financing for the original pressing was obtained through a publishing deal with Zomba Music Publishing after one of its representatives, Jeff Blue, heard the band playing at the Whisky a Go Go. Initial sales were merely a handful but the band persisted. They began plugging the album in chat rooms and sending free copies to anyone who expressed interest. An informal 'street team' developed from the on-line community to spread the music. With Dave Farrell's temporary departure from the band to perform with Tasty Snax, Kyle Christener took over the bass position. However, he did not stay for long and did not take part in the band's debut album.

Musical technique

Musical technique is the ability of instrumental and vocal musicians to exert optimal control of their instruments or vocal cords in order to produce the precise musical effects they desire. Improving one's technique generally entails practicing exercises that improve one's muscular sensitivity and agility. Technique is independent of musicality.

To improve their technique, musicians often practice fundamental patterns of notes such as the natural, minor, major, and chromatic scales, minor and major triads, dominant and diminished sevenths, formula patterns and arpeggios. For example, triads and sevenths teach how to play chords with accuracy and speed. Scales teach how to move quickly and gracefully from one note to another (usually by step). Arpeggios teach how to play broken chords over larger intervals. Many of these components of music are found in difficult compositions, for example, a large tuple chromatic scale is a very common element to classical and romantic era compositions as part of the end of a phrase.
