Informant

An informant is a person who provides privileged information about a person or organization to an agency. The term is usually used within the law enforcement world, where they are officially known as confidential or criminal informants (CI), and can often refer pejoratively to the supply of information without the consent of the other parties with the intent of malicious, personal or financial gain. However, the term is used in politics, industry and academia.

Criminal informants

Informants are commonly found in the world of organized crime. By its very nature, organized crime involves many people who are aware of each other's guilt, in a variety of illegal activities. Quite frequently, confidential informants (or criminal informants) will provide information in order to obtain lenient treatment for themselves and provide information, over an extended period of time, in return for money or for police to overlook their own criminal activities. Quite often, someone will become an informant following their arrest.

"Informer" is a 1993 song by Canadian reggae musician Snow from his debut album 12 Inches of Snow. Produced by MC Shan, who also contributed a verse, the single was a chart-topping hit, spending seven consecutive weeks at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was his biggest hit in the United Kingdom, where it reached Number 2, behind two different number one singles. In 2007, the song was ranked No. 84 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s. Conversely, the song was included in Pitchfork Media's 2010 list of "the seven worst U.S. No. 1 singles of the 90s".

History and content

In 1992, while on vacation in Queens, New York, Snow met MC Shan, and the pair produced a four-song demo. MC Shan then introduced Snow to producer–managers Steve Salem and David Eng, who signed him to their Motor Jam Records company, and licensed the music to East West Records. Shortly thereafter, Snow began serving an eight-month sentence in Toronto for assault. "Informer" began getting radio and MuchMusic airplay while he was incarcerated.

Angie is a 1994 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Martha Coolidge, and starring Geena Davis as the titular character. It is based on the 1991 novel Angie, I Says by Avra Wing, which was a New York Times Notable Book of 1991.

Plot

Angie (Geena Davis) is an office worker who lives in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York and dreams of a better life. After learning that she is pregnant by her boyfriend Vinnie (James Gandolfini), she decides that she will have the baby, but not Vinnie as a husband.

This turns the entire neighborhood upside down and starts her on a journey of self-discovery, including a love affair with a man named Noel (Stephen Rea) who she meets at an art museum. Even her best friend Tina (Aida Turturro) has trouble understanding her.

Reception

The film opened to mixed reviews and was a box office bomb. In addition, Geena Davis, who won an Oscar six years before for The Accidental Tourist received mixed to negative reviews. Critics felt she could have been better in this movie or another set in Brooklyn: originally, Madonna was to play the title character, but dropped out at the last minute. The film was famous for introducing three actors who would star on the TV show The Sopranos: James Gandolfini, Aida Turturro, and Michael Rispoli.

Angie (album)

Angie is the first album recorded by the Latina R&B vocalist Angela Bofill. It was produced by the GRP Records label heads Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. It was released in 1978 on the GRP label; a digitally remastered version was released on Buddah Records in 2001.

Reception

The album was heralded as a mild success, popularizing on some of the themes of the times. The song, "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", charted fairly well on the U.S R&B front. Being the first of her kind to do so, Bofill's sophisticated vocals would prove to have an effect on the jazz, Latin and urban contemporary music audiences of the time.
