Infidel

Infidel (literally "unfaithful") is a pejorative term used in certain religions for those who do not believe the central tenets of one's own religion, are members of another religion, or are not religious.

Infidel is an ecclesiastical term in Christianity around which the Church developed a body of theology that deals with the concept of infidelity, which makes a clear differentiation between those who were baptized and followed the teachings of the Church versus those who are outside the faith. The term infidel was used by Christians to describe those perceived as the enemies of Christianity.

After the ancient world the concept of otherness, an exclusionary notion of the outside by societies with more or less coherent cultural boundaries, became associated with the development of the monotheistic and prophetic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

In modern era literature, the term infidel includes in its scope atheists,polytheists,animists,heathen and pagan. Infidel as a concept is sometimes contrasted with the concept of religious pluralism.

Infidels (Bob Dylan album)

Infidels is the twenty-second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on October 27, 1983 by Columbia Records.

Produced by Mark Knopfler and Dylan himself, Infidels is seen as his return to secular music, following a conversion to Christianity, three evangelical, gospel records and a subsequent return to a less religious lifestyle. Though he has never abandoned religious imagery, Infidels gained much attention for its focus on more personal themes of love and loss, in addition to commentary on the environment and geopolitics. Christopher Connelly of Rolling Stone called those gospel albums just prior to Infidels "lifeless", and saw Infidels as making Bob Dylan's career viable again. According to Connelly and others, Infidels is Dylan's best poetic and melodic work since Blood on the Tracks.

The critical reaction was the strongest for Dylan in years, almost universally hailed for its songwriting and performances. The album also fared well commercially, reaching #20 in the US and going gold, and #9 in the UK. Still, many fans and critics were disappointed that several songs were inexplicably cut from the album just prior to mastering—primarily "Blind Willie McTell", considered a career highlight by many critics, and not officially released until it appeared on The Bootleg Series Volume III eight years later.

Infidels (band)

Infidels were a Canadian funk-rock band in the 1990s.

The band formed in 1990 when Molly Johnson reunited with Norman Orenstein, her partner in the short-lived 1980s band Alta Moda. The duo originally wrote a number of songs that they planned to offer to Candi and the Backbeat, but got an unexpected response after sending them to the Canadian division of IRS Records, Candi's label: president Paul Orescan had been a big fan of Alta Moda, and wanted to sign the duo to record a new album. Considering Alta Moda to be a finished project, Johnson chose the new name as a tribute to the Bob Dylan album Infidels. They added Washington Savage, Jeff Jones and Owen Tennyson to the lineup, and released a self-titled album in 1991.

The single "100 Watt Bulb" peaked at #25 in the RPM charts the week of November 23, 1991, and "Celebrate" peaked at #12 the week of February 22, 1992. "Without Love" and "Shaking" also garnered radio play in 1992 and both reached RPM's CanCon monitor charts, but neither song reached the magazine's main singles chart. Despite the chart success of "100 Watt Bulb" and "Celebrate", however, the album was only a modest seller, peaking at #74 in RPM's albums chart the week of February 29, 1992.

Emergency

An emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or environment. Most emergencies require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation, although in some situations, mitigation may not be possible and agencies may only be able to offer palliative care for the aftermath.

While some emergencies are self-evident (such as a natural disaster that threatens many lives), many smaller incidents require that an observer (or affected party) decide whether it qualifies as an emergency. The precise definition of an emergency, the agencies involved and the procedures used, vary by jurisdiction, and this is usually set by the government, whose agencies (emergency services) are responsible for emergency planning and management.

Emergency (series)

Emergency is a video game series of rescue simulations by the German developer Sixteen Tons Entertainment and creative director and founder of the series Ralph Stock. Publisher of the first game in 1998 was TopWare Interactive; In 2002 Emergency 2 was published by Take 2 Interactive who went on to publish both Emergency 3 in 2005 and Emergency 4 + Gold Edition in 2006 alongside the publisher Rondomedia. As of 2010 Deep Silver has taken over the publishing operations of the Emergency Series and its Spin-Offs.

In the game, players take control of the emergency services; firefighters, ambulance services, police and, technical services (THW). The central element of the Emergency games is to head up operations of fictional rescues, crimes, medical and catastrophe management, commanding a pool of vehicles and personnel.

Controls and graphics are typical of a Real-Time Strategy game; using the left-mouse button to select your unit(s), the right-mouse button to command movement or an action of the selected unit(s). Camera work takes typical angles of the RTS genre.

The Emergency (Ireland)

The Emergency (Irish: Ré na Práinne / An Éigeandáil) was the state of emergency which existed in the state of Ireland during the Second World War. The state remained neutral throughout the war. "The Emergency" has been used metonymically in historical and cultural commentary to refer to the state during the war. The state of emergency was proclaimed by Dáil Éireann on 2 September 1939, allowing the passage of the Emergency Powers Act 1939 by the Oireachtas the following day. This gave sweeping new powers to the government for the duration of the Emergency, including internment, censorship of the press and correspondence, and government control of the economy. The Emergency Powers Act lapsed on 2 September 1946. Although the state of emergency itself was not rescinded until 1 September 1976, no emergency legislation was ever in force after 1946 to exploit this anomaly.

Background

On 6 December 1922, following the Anglo-Irish Treaty that ended the War of Independence, the island of Ireland became an autonomous dominion, known as the Irish Free State. On 8 December 1922, the parliament of the six north-eastern counties, already known as Northern Ireland, voted to opt out of the Irish Free State and rejoin the United Kingdom. This Treaty settlement was immediately followed by the bitter Irish Civil War between the pro-Treaty and anti-Treaty factions of the Irish Republican Army.
