1993 Indy Lights season

The 1993 Firestone Indy Lights Championship consisted of 12 races and featured the introduction of new Lola chassis. However, this season was also unique in that included a separate "B-Class" classification for drivers using the previous season's March chassis. However, the B class was not a success, never with more than four entries and many oval races only saw a single entry from B-class "champion" Jack Miller, the only driver to compete in all twelve B-Class races.

Bryan Herta put on a strong showing in the main championship, winning 7 races and defeating his closest rival by 91 points.

2009 Indy Lights season

The 2009 Indy Racing League Firestone Indy Lights season began April 4 in St. Petersburg, Florida, where it ran a double-header weekend in support to the season-opening IndyCar Series event. The schedule will take place over 14 race weekends in support of the IndyCars, with 15 total races. Unlike the 2008 season, the St. Petersburg weekend will be the only double-header the series has announced. J. R. Hildebrand ended the season as champion for Andretti Green-AFS Racing, winning the championship by nearly 100 points ahead of Vision Racing's James Davison and his AGR-AFS Racing team-mate Sebastian Saavedra.

Indy Lights

The third and final step on the Mazda Road to Indy debuted as Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires in 2014. Sanctioned by IndyCar, the series is now operated by Andersen Promotions, which oversees all three levels of the ladder system including the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda and the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. The series ran from 1986 to 2001 as part of CART, first as the American Racing Series then as the Dayton Indy Lights. The IndyCar sanctioned series was founded in 2002 as the Infiniti Pro Series with the moniker Indy Lights returning in 2008 when CART and IndyCar unified.

The Mazda Road to Indy is the only driver development program in the world to feature a champion’s scholarship at every level to advance to the next step on the ladder system. The Indy Lights champion is awarded a $1M scholarship toward the Verizon IndyCar Series with three guaranteed races including the Indianapolis 500. Team and driver prize packages total over $1.9 million. 2015 champion Spencer Pigot has signed with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to compete in two Verizon IndyCar Series races plus the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
