Indian Land Grants
Indian Land Grants were land tracts granted to various Indians by Treaty or by United States Congressional action in the Nineteenth century in northwestern Ohio.

Jean Baptiste Richardville
Jean Baptiste Richardville was principal chief of the Miami tribe. He was granted tracts of land by the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's. In Ohio, Article 3 granted “Two sections, on the Twenty-seven mile creek, where the road from St. Mary's to Fort Wayne crosses it, being one section on each side of said creek.” This tract was partially in Township 27 North Range 15 East of the Second Principal Meridian in Adams County, Indiana, and part in T3S of R1E of the First Principal Meridian in Van Wert County, Ohio.
Peter Labadie
In Article 3 of the Treaty of St. Mary's, Peter Labadie was granted 640 acres of land on the St. Mary's River in Van Wert County, Ohio and Mercer County, Ohio in T3S R1E and T4S R1E of the First Principal Meridian.
Charley
A Miami chief named Charley was granted 640 acres of land on the west side of the St. Mary's river by Article 3 of the Treaty of St. Mary's. It was located in T4S R1E and T4S R2E of the First Principal Meridian in Mercer County, Ohio.
Indian Land, South Carolina
Indian Land is an unincorporated community in the northern most part (the "Panhandle") of Lancaster County, South Carolina, United States. It lies just south of Ballantyne in southern Charlotte, east of Fort Mill, and west of Waxhaw. It is a major suburb of Charlotte. The primary ZIP code of the community is 29707. The major highway is US-521.

Education
Schools in Indian Land include Indian Land Elementary, Harrisburg Elementary (opened fall 2014), Indian Land Middle School, and Indian Land High School. Indian Land High School recently earned state recognition for being a Red Carpet School. Indian Land Middle School has been recognized as a National School to Watch, a State School of Character, a Palmetto Gold School, and a Red Carpet School.
Transportation
U.S. Route 521 and South Carolina Highway 160 are two major roads that run through Indian Land. Indian Land is part of the South Carolina Rock Hill-Fort Mill Area Transportation Study (RFATS).
Land grant
A land grant is a gift of real estate – land or its privileges – made by a government or other authority as a reward for services to an individual, especially in return for military service. Grants of land are also awarded to individuals and companies as incentives to develop unused land in relatively unpopulated countries; the process of awarding land grants is not limited to the countries named below.
Ancient Rome
Roman soldiers were given pensions (praemia) at the end of their service including cash or land. Augustus fixed the amount in AD 5 at 3,000 denarii and by the time of Caracalla it had risen to 5,000 denarii. One denarius was roughly equivalent to a day's wages for an unskilled laborer.
Australia
Starting from 1788, the British crown granted land to released convicts in the colony of New South Wales.
Males were allowed 30 acres (12 ha), plus 20 acres (8.1 ha) if they were married, and 10 acres (4.0 ha) additional per child. Instructions were issued on 20 August 1789 that non-commissioned Marine Officers were to be entitled to 100 acres (40 ha) additional and privates to 50 acres (20 ha) additional.
