"In the Sun" is a song by American duo She & Him, written by Zooey Deschanel for their second album, Volume Two. The song was released as the first single from the album on February 23, 2010, a full month ahead of the album. It was published on-line by Pitchfork Media on January 22, 2010. The duo performed the song on the Late Show with David Letterman on April 2, 2010 in promotion of their new album.

Interviewed by Pitchfork Media, songwriter Deschanel stated "I originally composed it with a classic jazz chord progression—with a little chromatic step—and it was slower. But we got in the studio and Matt [Ward asked], 'Why don't we put a Bee Gees beat on it?' And it totally came to life in a way I didn't expect." The song features backing vocals by Tilly and the Wall.

Although the single is released on vinyl, it is available to purchase on digital stores and available as high quality 320kbit/s mp3 or FLAC through their record label.

Music video

A video of "In the Sun" premiered on Pitchfork Media's web site on March 9, 2010. The video, set in a high school, was directed by Peyton Reed and features performances by Deschanel and Ward. The filming took place at Verdugo Hills High School.

In the Sun (Russian: Под солнцем) is a painting by Alexander Samokhvalov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Никола́евич Самохва́лов, 1894–1971), depicting his wife, the artist Maria Alexseevna Kleshchar-Samokhvalova (Russian: Мария Алексеевна Клещар-Самохвалова; 1915–2000).

History

Alexander Samokhvalov was a well-known Russian painter, watercolorist, graphic artist, illustrator, and art teacher. He was an Honored Arts Worker of the RSFSR, who lived and worked in Leningrad, and was regarded as one of the founders and brightest representatives of the Socialist realism art movement.

The portrait In the Sun was painted in Gurzuf, Crimea, where in 1950–60 Samokhvalov repeatedly vacationed with his wife Maria Alekseyevna Kleshchar-Samokhvalova. She was born in the Ukraine near Poltava. At age seven, she was orphaned. After World War II, Mary moved to Leningrad, where she met Alexander Samokhvalov; they married in 1950. For more than 20 years of marriage, she posed for many paintings as well as oil portraits and drawings. In particular she served as a model for the central female figure of the picture Cafe Gurzuf (a young woman at a table in a pink blouse, apparently studying the menu).

Y Not

Y Not is the sixteenth studio album by Ringo Starr, released on 12 January 2010 on the UM^e and Hip-O Records labels.

Music, lyrics and recording

"Peace Dream" features former Beatle Paul McCartney on bass; another Beatle, John Lennon is referenced in the song. "The Other Side of Liverpool" is about Starr's pre-Beatles days in Liverpool. "Walk with You" features shared vocals with McCartney. Starr duets with Joss Stone on closing track "Who's Your Daddy".

In addition to McCartney, the album also includes collaborations with Joe Walsh, Van Dyke Parks, Ben Harper and Richard Marx. It was the first album of his career which Starr primarily produced (he had previously co-produced several albums).

Release

The first single from the album, "Walk with You", released 22 December 2009.

In the US, the release of the album perpetuated the fact that The Beatles, either as a group, or as solo artists, have released or charted at least one song or album every calendar year since 1964.

Reception

The album debuted at number 58 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, with 7,965 copies sold in the US during the first week of release. The album also charted on the Top Internet Albums chart in the US. As of February 2010, the album has sold over 30,000 copies worldwide.
