Shade (comics)

The Shade (Richard Swift) is a comic book character developed in the 1940s for National Comics, first appearing in the pages of Flash Comics in a story titled "The Man Who Commanded the Night", scripted by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Hal Sharp. Debuting as a villain, the Shade was best known for fighting against two generations of superheroes, most notably the Golden Age and Silver Age versions of the Flash. He eventually became a mentor for Jack Knight, the son of the Golden Age Starman Ted Knight, a hero the Shade had also fought.

Though initially portrayed in the Golden Age comics as a thief with a cane that could manipulate shadows, the character was reinvented in 1994 as a morally ambiguous Victorian era immortal who gained the ability to manipulate shadows and his immortality from an unexplained mystical event. In 2009, the Shade was ranked as IGN's 89th Greatest Villain of All Time.

Fictional character biography

The 'Shade' draws his alias and source of power from Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy, specifically its first book, "Inferno", which describes the Nine Rings of Hell. This poem is the most cited depiction of Hell, and the various characters in the story referred to as "the Shade" are references to the perpetual darkness of Hell itself. The comic book villain "The Shade" uses his power of perpetual night to cast a blanket of darkness over various parts of the world. In darkness, evil triumphs.

The Shade (EP)

The Shade is an EP released by the Canadian band Metric in 2015 as a cassette format to fit their new "old-school" style. The four songs will appear on the album Pagans in Vegas (except for Office Towers Escalate which only appears on the iTunes edition).

The Shade (1998 film)

The Shade is Raphael Nadjari's debut feature. This is a modern adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's A Gentle Creature, and takes place in contemporary New York City.

Plot

The film tells the story of a Jewish middle aged pawnbroker who meets a mysterious woman who will become his wife without their truly knowing each other. The film begins with Simon, alone in his apartment with the corpse of his wife, Anna, who has just committed suicide. In his grief, he remembers the first time he met her, a year ago when she walked into his pawnbroker's shop in Spanish Harlem. Mysterious Anna, who seems to come from nowhere, impresses solitary Simon with her beauty, and he proposes to her on their first night out. They then enter into a passionate relationship that will lead her to death.

Zen+

Zen+ is the codename for an AMD microarchitecture that will eventually succeed Zen. According to AMD, Zen+ is expected to bring a slight increase in instructions per clock over Zen, but not nearly as large as the jump from Excavator to Zen.

Zen is a 2007 drama-horror film written and directed by Gary Davis. Filmed in Florida, it was released and screened at a Boynton Beach, Florida cinema on April 12, 2007. The DVD was released in North America on April 13, 2007.

Plot

Set in 17th-Century Japan, "Zen" is the chronicle of a young samurai, Master Mitzu Zen, who learns the secret way of killing vampires while learning about women and life in general. Master Zen (Kit DeZolt), a naive master who doesn't know anything about women and love, goes on a quest to find out the truth about his parents' sacred sword. While meeting people along the way, he ends up running into more than he bargained for when he starts encountering vampires.

Count Osaka

Davis' 2009 film Count Osaka is a sequel to Zen, with DeZolt reprising his role as the original movie's title character. It premiered December 2, 2009. It aired as part of the first Royal Palm Independent Film Festival in early 2010.

Silverwing (series)

The Silverwing Book Series is a series of books by Kenneth Oppel featuring the adventures of a young bat, Shade. The books are commonly assigned in the curriculum of upper elementary and middle school grades in Canada.

Summary

Great war

The great war between the birds and the beasts happened approximately 65 million years before the story (at the end of the dinosaurs). The bats, seeing themselves as being both, but neither, refrained from fighting. At the end of the war, the two warring factions banished the bats. They could not see the sun again because they refrained. The war is based upon a fable by Aesop called "The Birds, the Beasts and the Bat."
