Deià

Deià is a small coastal village in the Serra de Tramuntana, which forms the northern ridge of the Spanish island of Mallorca. It is located about 16 kilometres (10 mi) north of Valldemossa, and it is known for its literary and musical residents. Its idyllic landscape, orange and olive groves on steep cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, served as a draw for German, English, and American expatriates after the First World War.

The English poet, novelist, and scholar Robert Graves was one of the first foreigners to settle in the village, where he collaborated with Laura Riding in setting up the Seizin Press. Graves returned after the war and remained in Deià until his death. He used the town as the setting for many of his stories, including the historical novel Hercules my Shipmate. His house is now a museum.

Anaïs Nin visited the village in the 1920s, and she wrote a short story set on the village's beach. The Spanish writer, Carme Riera, recently wrote a short story about Nin's. The town is also the unnamed setting of the Uruguayan novelist, Cristina Peri Rossi's The Ship of Fools (La nave de los locos). The Nicaraguan poet and novelist, Claribel Alegría, lives in Deià today. Anja Rubik married Serbian model Sasha Knezevic in this village. They married on 16 July 2011.

Deus

Deus (Latin pronunciation: [ˈdeːʊs]) is Latin for "god" or "deity". Latin deus and dīvus "divine", are descended from Proto-Indo-European *deiwos, "celestial" or "shining", from the same root as *Dyēus, the reconstructed chief god of the Proto-Indo-European pantheon. Compare Greek Zeus (Ζεύς dzeus; Aeolic Greek Δεύς deus) and Sanskrit देव deva. Latin dies ("day") is considered to have derived from the same PIE root that originated deus. This is to say that a celestial shining body, the Sun, gives material form to the words for "day" in the Romance Languages.

In Classical Latin, deus (feminine dea) was a general nounreferring to a deity, while in technical usage a divus or diva was a figure who had become divine, such as a divinized emperor. In Late Latin, Deus came to be used mostly for the Christian God. It was inherited by the Romance languages in French Dieu, Spanish Dios, Portuguese and Galician Deus, Italian Dio, etc, and by the Celtic languages in Welsh Duw and Irish Dia.

  • Hero (magazine)

HERO Magazine was an American glossy bimonthly gay magazine co-founded in 1997 by Sam Jensen Page and Paul Horne. The magazine stopped publication in January 2002. It was based in Los Angeles.

    Overview

The magazine rode the wave of the "mainstreaming" of gay culture and was the first gay magazine to be classified as "highly recommended" by Library Journal. It published the first automotive column in a national gay magazine, the first gay man's wedding guide, etc. HERO turned away from the "sex sells" attitude of many other gay publications, and did not accept adult or tobacco advertising. The magazine was also more inclusive of couples and men over 40 than other gay men's magazines at the time.

After fast growth in its first 3 years, the magazine's financial backing was frozen after September 11, 2001, and the publication ceased operations in January 2002. Parent company HERO Media continues to develop other online and print publications, including SpaTravelGuy.com.

    In Nije Dei

    by: De Kast

De nacht is foarby, de sinne is frij, omheech te gean
Aanst wurdt it dei, de moarn is te nij, om stil te stean
It libben wie wrang, it wachtsjen te lang
    Mar 't nimt in kear
Wes mar net bang, nea wer bang, it hoecht net mear
Der sil gjin dei begjinne, dat ik net by dy bin
Gjin oerwurk foar us rinne, sunder sin
    refr.:
Jou my dyn han, jou my dyn hert
    Asto it doarst mei my
Hjir is myn han, hjir is myn hert
'k Jou myn bestean oan dy
Lang wie it kald en tsjuster, aanst komt de dei
Fynt it ljocht syn wei, yn in nije dei
'k Kaam net ut e rie, it paed dat ik gie, it wie sunder ein
De tiid dy't der wie, it hert dat ik hie, it wie fersein
'k Ha my oan dy jun, mysels yn dy fun, 'k gebjin op e nij
Leafde hat wun, twa minsken bun, mar fugelfrij
Der sil gjin dei begjinne, dat ik net by dy bin
Gjin oerwurk foar us rinne, sunder sin
