Immunity (medical)

In biology, immunity is the balanced state of having adequate biological defenses to fight infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion, while having adequate tolerance to avoid allergy, and autoimmune diseases.

Innate and adaptive immunity

It is the capability of the body to resist harmful microorganisms or viruses from entering it. Immunity involves both specific and nonspecific components. The nonspecific components act either as barriers or as eliminators of wide range of pathogens irrespective of antigenic specificity. Other components of the immune system adapt themselves to each new disease encountered and are able to generate pathogen-specific immunity.

The basic premise for the division of the immune system into innate and adaptive components comes down to the innate system being composed of primitive bone marrow cells that are programmed to recognise foreign substances and react, versus the adaptive system being composed of more advanced lymphatic cells that are programmed to recognise self substances and don't react. The reaction to foreign substances is etymologically described as inflammation, meaning to set on fire, while the non-reaction to self substances is etymologically described as immunity, meaning to exempt. The interaction of these two components of the immune system creates a dynamic biological environment where "Health" can be seen as an active physical state where what is self is immunologically spared, and what is foreign is inflammatorily and immunologically eliminated. Extending this concept, "Disease" then can arise when what is foriegn cannot be eliminated, or what is self is not spared.

Immune is the third studio album by Soul Embraced, released on February 25, 2003.

Critical reception

Awarding the album three stars from AllMusic, Alex Henderson states, "his CD is an exciting demonstration of the fact that Soul Embraced does not govern by brute force alone." Andy Shaw, giving the album a seven out of ten for Cross Rhythms, describes, "Soul Embraced have managed to put something of a new twist into it." Rating the album a three out of five at The Phantom Tollbooth, writes, "Immune is a step in the right direction for Soul-Embraced." Joe Quinlan of JFH states, "To be honest, I felt the entire album sounded the same, empty and slow. After Soul Embraced's last album came out (Dead Alive), I'd listen to that release any day over Immune. Also, considering the album was recorded in 2003, most kids are too much into Underoath and August Burns Red these days to enjoy Immune.

As for me, I still enjoy the album and anything Soul Embraced puts out. It's REAL metal, not a one-string melody, with a Drop-D break down. If you want a thrilling death metal record, purchase Dead Alive, but if you enjoy a simple yet original metal album to relax to, pick up Immune."

GLIMPSE

GLIMPSE is a text indexing and retrieval software program originally developed at the University of Arizona by Udi Manber, Sun Wu, and Burra Gopal. It was released under the ISC open source license in September 2014.

GLIMPSE stands for GLobal IMPlicit SEarch. While many text indexing schemes create quite large indexes (usually around 50% of the size of the original text), a GLIMPSE-created index is only 2-4% of the size of the original text.

GLIMPSE uses and takes a great deal of inspiration from Agrep, which was also developed at the University of Arizona, but GLIMPSE uses a high level index whereas Agrep parses all the text each time.

The basic algorithm is similar to other text indexing and retrieval engines, except that the text records in the index are huge, consisting of multiple files each. This index is searched using a boolean matching algorithm like most other text indexing and retrieval engines. After one or more of these large text records is matched, Agrep is used to actually scan for the exact text desired. While this is slower than traditional totally indexed approaches, the advantage of the smaller index is seen to be advantageous to the individual user. This approach would not work particularly well across websites, but it would work reasonably well for a single site, or a single workstation. In addition, the smaller index can be created more quickly than a full index.
