History [link]

The village toponym is derived from the Old English for 'Ylla's boundary', referring to the ancient boundary with Oxfordshire.[citation needed] In 1086 the Domesday Book recorded the village as Imere.[1]

The nave of the Church of England parish church of Saint Peter dates from the 12th century.[1] In the 14th century the chancel was rebuilt and a south transept was added to the nave.[1] In the 16th century the bellcote was added to the west end of the building. It has three bells, the oldest of which was cast in about 1500.[1] In 1662 the south transept was demolished.[1] The building was restored in 1859-60 under the direction of the Gothic Revival architect G.E. Street.[2]

The master falconer of King James I lived in Ilmer.[citation needed]

The family name Elmer, common in this part of the country, comes from this village.[citation needed]

In 1899-1905 the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway was built through the parish. In 1906 Ilmer Halt was opened on the line to serve the village. British Railways closed the halt in 1963. The railway remains open as part of the Chiltern Main Line.

In the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the scene where spies attempt to blow up Chitty was filmed at Ilmer bridge.[citation needed]

Fantasy

by: Almora

Close your eyes, feel the power of the fantasy
Into the dreams, see the colour of the mystery
Turn to light, cause darkness is your real enemy
Close your eyes and tell me what you see
All of those dreams are bright as stars
That flame in the twilight
You never give up to follow those lights
Close your eyes and tell me what you see
To have a dream's to wonder like to be free
You hear the voice of eternity
Feel the power of the fantasy
You remember the old stories in your memory,
Into the dreams, listen the call of the fairies
See the light, only you can change your reality
Close your eyes and tell me what you see
All of those dreams are bright as stars
That flame in the twilight
You never give up to follow those lights
Close your eyes and tell me what you see
To have dream's to wonder like to be free
You hear the voice of eternity
