Illinois Route 38

Illinois Route 38 is a west–east state highway that runs across northern Illinois. It runs from U.S. Route 52 (US 52) in downtown Dixon to US 12/US 20/US 45 (Mannheim Road) in Westchester. This is a distance of 89.28 miles (143.68 km). It runs concurrently with the Lincoln Highway between Dixon and the junction of Illinois Route 31 in Geneva where it transitions via State Street onto Roosevelt Road at the junction of Kirk Road and continues through the western suburbs to its terminus at the junction of Mannheim Road. Roosevelt Road continues on an additional 14 miles without a route designation until terminating at US 41 (Lake Shore Drive).

Illinois Route 38 travels along the former route of US 330, that existed from 1926 to 1942. It spanned from Galt to Lynwood.

Route description

Illinois 38 runs along the historic Lincoln Highway for much of its length, and parallels Interstate 88 as well. Illinois 38 serves some cities that have no interchanges on Interstate 88. It enters the Chicago metropolitan area at Elburn, as this border is pushed west with the extension of the Metra rail system. Except in cities, Illinois 38 has two lanes west of Geneva.

Illinois Route 18

Illinois Route 18 is a rural eastwest state road in central Illinois. It runs east from the town of Henry at Illinois Route 29 to the town of Blackstone at Illinois Route 17. This is a distance of 39.01 miles (62.78 km).

Route description

Illinois 18 crosses the Illinois River at Henry, and is the first river crossing south of Interstate 180. The terrain is generally flat outside of the Illinois River Valley area. In Streator, Illinois 18 westbound becomes Main Street. Eastbound, it becomes Bridge Street.

History

From 1918 through 1927, SBI Route 18 ran from Chicago to Princeton using modern U.S. Route 34. In 1939, it was applied to what was then SBI Route 17. The next year, the route was completed and Illinois 17 moved to a new highway south of Streator.

  • Illinois Highway Ends: Illinois Route 18
  • Illinois Route 127

Illinois Route 127 is a northsouth highway in central and southern Illinois. Its southern terminus is at Illinois Route 3 near Olive Branch and its northern terminus at Interstate 55, along with the southern terminus of Illinois Route 48 in Raymond. This is a distance of 167.53 miles (269.61 km).

    Route description

Illinois 127 parallels U.S. Route 51 for its entire length. U.S. 51 is generally a few miles to the east of Illinois 127, though they never cross. After leaving Alexander County, the route passes through each of the next seven county seats.

Illinois 127 overlaps Illinois Route 146 near Jonesboro, Illinois Route 149 in Murphysboro, Illinois Route 13 from Pickneyville to Murphysboro, U.S. Route 50 in Carlyle, Illinois Route 140 near Greenville, Illinois Route 16 in Hillsboro and wrong-way with Illinois 48 at its northern terminus. (Illinois 48 is a northbound route at the same time Illinois 127 is marked southbound).

    History

SBI Route 127 originally ran from Raymond to Carlyle. In 1937 it was extended to Nashville, replacing Illinois Route 153. By 1939 it had been extended to Pinckneyville. In 1944, it was extended west to U.S. Route 66, and south to its current terminus.

    Interstate 190 (Illinois)

Interstate 190 (abbreviated I-190) is an intrastate Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Illinois. I-190 runs west from I-90 to O'Hare International Airport. This is a distance of 3.07 miles (4.94 km). Interstate 190 is the westernmost leg of the Kennedy Expressway. This leg is often referred to as the O'Hare Expressway.

    Route description

Interstate 190 has two lanes in either direction between Interstate 90 and Interstate 294, and three lanes west of I-294. The freeway portion of I-190 consists largely of cloverleaf interchanges.

Each road crossing I-190 is accessible via exit ramps. Not all interchanges are accessible in the same way from both directions, however. For example, the exit to southbound U.S. 12/45 traveling eastbound on I-190 requires exiting at Bessie Coleman Drive. Westbound, direct access is provided.

There is no specific sign indicating Interstate 190's western terminus at O'Hare. Interstate-standard freeway ends roughly at the ramps to the upper (Departure) and lower (Arrival) loops. The freeway then resumes shortly after both loops merge to cross an emergency fire lane.

    Illinois Route 149

Illinois Route 149 is an eastwest state road in southern Illinois. It runs from Illinois Route 3 near Grimsby east to Illinois Route 34 in Thompsonville. This is a distance of 45.92 miles (73.90 km).

    Route description

Illinois 149 runs eastwest through downtown Murphysboro and to the north of Carbondale. It also runs to the north of Herrin. West of Carbondale, Illinois 149 overlaps Illinois Routes 13 and 127. Through West Frankfort, Illinois 149 doubles as "Main Street."

    History

SBI Route 149 originally ran from Hurst to Thompsonville. On April 1, 1963, IL 149 was extended 21 miles (34 km) east over IL 144.

    Illinois Route 128

Illinois Route 128 is a northsouth state road in east-central Illinois. It runs from Interstate 70 in Altamont to Illinois Route 121 in Dalton City. This is a distance of 55.57 miles (89.43 km).

    Route description

Illinois 128 is a two-lane, rural surface road for its entire length. Immediately north of Interstate 70, it overlaps U.S. Route 40 for 3 miles (5 km). It is also concurrent with Illinois Route 16 near Shelbyville.

Illinois 128 may or may not run through Moultrie County, depending on its exact routing, as the route appears to run along portions of the Shelby/Moultrie and Macon/Moultrie county lines.

    History

SBI Route 128 originally ran from U.S. Route 40 (originally Illinois Route 11) to Illinois 16 west of Shelbyville. In 1937, it replaced Illinois Route 169 north of Shelbyville to Dalton City. Finally, as Interstate 70 was being built in the 1950s and 1960s, it was extended along U.S. 40 to Altamont.

    Illinois Route 47

Illinois Route 47 is a largely rural northsouth state highway that runs from the Wisconsin state border at Highway 120 near Hebron, to Illinois Route 10, just south of Interstate 72 near Seymour. This is a distance of 169.76 miles (273.20 km). Even though Route 47 is primarily rural, in several suburbs of Chicago, such as Woodstock, traffic can be congested. Even in heavily rural areas, traffic is heavy.

It crosses most Interstate highways in northern and central Illinois, but the largest towns that Illinois 47 serves are Huntley (at the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway), Yorkville (at U.S. Route 34), Woodstock (at U.S. Route 14), Lily Lake at (Illinois Route 64), Elburn (at Illinois Route 38), Sugar Grove (at U.S. Route 30), Morris (at Interstate 80), Dwight (at Interstate 55), Forrest (at U.S. Route 24), Gibson City (at Illinois Route 54), and Mahomet (at Interstate 74).

    Route description

Illinois 47 overlaps Illinois Route 72 and U.S. Route 20 at Pingree Grove, a village approximately 60 miles (97 km) from Chicago; this concurrency is part of a so-called wrong-way concurrency, where one can be driving both west on Illinois 72 and east on U.S. 20 at the same time. Route 47 also shares concurrencies with Illinois Route 9 and Illinois 54 in Gibson City, U.S. Route 30 in Sugar Grove, U.S. Route 6 in Morris, Historic U.S. Route 66 in Dwight, and U.S. Route 150 in Mahomet.
