I Wonder Why

"I Wonder Why" is a doo-wop song, written by Melvin Fair (lyrics) and Ricardo Weeks, and first recorded by Dion and the Belmonts (released as Laurie Records' first single, number 3013), becoming the group's first national pop chart hit, in 1958. It is sung from the point of view of a man telling his girlfriend that he loves her but does not know why. The song is noted for Carlo Mastrangelo singing the bass part in rhythm. The song was used in the film A Bronx Tale, in the pilot episode of the television series The Sopranos, and in John Carpenter's film adaption of Stephen King's "Christine". A cover was sung by Nicolas Cage in Peggy Sue Got Married. A cover was also sung by Showaddywaddy in 1977, reaching number 2 in the UK Single Chart.

Brenda Lee

Brenda Mae Tarpley (born December 11, 1944), known as Brenda Lee, is an American performer and the top-charting solo female vocalist of the 1960s. She sang rockabilly, pop and country music, and had 47 US chart hits during the 1960s, and is ranked fourth in that decade surpassed only by Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Ray Charles. She is perhaps best known in the United States for her 1960 hit "I'm Sorry", and 1958's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", a United States holiday standard for more than 50 years.

At 4 ft 9 inches tall (approximately 145 cm), she received the nickname Little Miss Dynamite in 1957 after recording the song "Dynamite" and was one of the earliest pop stars to have a major contemporary international following.

Lee's popularity faded in the late 1960s as her voice matured, but she continued a successful recording career by returning to her roots as a country singer with a string of hits through the 1970s and 1980s. "I Wonder (Departure)" is a song by ABBA, released on their 1977 album ABBA: The Album. It was originally part of the ABBA-produced mini-musical The Girl with the Golden Hair, which they performed at the end of each of their 1977 concert tours.

Production

In a hypothetical sequel to Mamma Mia put together by the Telegraph, the song is sung at a point in the musical where Sophie "dreams of cutting loose [from Sky] and heading abroad".

Synopsis

The song is about whether the narrator should leave behind everything she knows in order to pursue something greater. It is comparable to the song Belle from Beauty & the Beast in this sense. ABBA : Let The Music Speak argues that the song parallels Frida own life story, in regard to the "momentous decision she took in her early 20's to leave her young family in pursuit of singing stardom".

Wonder Why? is a Canadian educational television program for children, produced by ATV in Halifax, Nova Scotia and aired nationally by CTV between 1990 and 1994. The program starred then-ATV chief meteorologist Richard Zurawski as the host and Liam Hyland as the young detective Question Mark. Running for 4 seasons, the Maritime-based science show won the CanPro Award each year for Best Educational Show for children. Each episode examined topics related to science, technology, and everyday items or processes.
