"I Need Air" is the debut single by British electronic music project Magnetic Man released from their debut album Magnetic Man. The single was released in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2010, peaking at number ten on the UK Singles Chart. It also peaked in the top twenty in Belgium and Denmark. "I Need Air" and its following releases are characteristic of the fast developing dubstep genre. The song features the refrain from Magnetic Man's promotional release "MAD" towards the end of the song.
"I Need Air" received vast critical praise from contemporary critics. Wendy Roby from Drowned in Sound deemed the song as a "faultless pop record". Roby further described it as "so perfectly put together" and "the record you should point to if an alien drops round for a cup of tea tomorrow and asks you what modern pop sounds like."
Fraser McAlpine from BBC felt that the song was simply too good, giving it a five-star rating and complimenting its ability to make the sensation of being overwhelmed by feelings in the presence of someone you really like sound like the most solitary experience a human heart can endure. McAlpine went on to described the way the rhythm of the vocal cuts across the beat and back again in the verses, and Angela Hunte's vocal pronunciation as brilliant.
Hugo Pierre Leclercq (born 30 May 1994), better known by his stage name Madeon, is a French electronic music producer from Nantes, France. He initially gained popularity by means of his video "Pop Culture", a mash-up of nearly forty different popular songs in real-time using a MIDI controller, which was published to YouTube and subsequently received millions of hits in its first few days of broadcast on the Internet.
Leclercq's first EP The City was released in 2012. His debut studio album Adventure was released on 30 March 2015, being supported by a 22-stop North American tour.
Leclercq started composing music at the age of 11, producing hands-up under the name of "Deamon" until 2010 when he began producing house music under his current name, Madeon, which is an anagram of his previous nickname. He won a remix competition for "The Island" by Pendulum the same year.
He went on to remix other electronic artists tracks the following year. A clip of him performing his mash-up "Pop Culture", uploaded to YouTube on 7 July 2011, propelled him to international fame. It featured samples from thirty-nine songs mixed together on-the-fly using a Novation Launchpad. The clip quickly went viral and reached over six million views in just a few days.
