I Know a Place

"I Know a Place" is a song with music and lyrics by Tony Hatch. It was recorded in 1965 by Petula Clark at the Pye Studios in Marble Arch in a session which featured drummer Bobby Graham and the Breakaways vocal group.

Released as the follow-up to "Downtown", "I Know a Place" became Clark's second consecutive Top Ten hit in the United States, remaining on the charts for twelve weeks and peaking at #3. Its UK success was more moderate with a #17 peak, establishing the mid-60s pattern of Clark generally having more hit impact in the US than in her homeland.

Talking about "I Know a Place", Clark told The Boston Globe in 1966 that "No matter what anyone tells you, to make it in the United States is still the dream of every transatlantic performer. You work for it. Long for it. And I can't tell you how ecstatic I was when 'I Know a Place' was nearly as big a hit as 'Downtown' and the Copacabana Club in New York signed me."

The recording reached #1 in Canada and South Africa, #3 in Rhodesia, #7 in Australia, and #10 in India.

I Know a Place (Davis Daniel album)

I Know a Place is the third and final studio album by American country music artist Davis Daniel. Its only single was its title track, which failed to chart. This was also Daniel's only album for the A&M Records label, which would close its country division shortly after the album's release.

  • I Know a Place (Petula Clark album)

I Know a Place is an album release by Petula Clark, which in the USA (her second on Warner Bros.) charted at #42. In the UK, the album was released as The New Petula Clark Album, a name which was dropped during later re-releases to prevent confusion among record-buyers.

Arranged and produced by Tony Hatch, the album followed on the release of Clark's "I Know a Place" hit single and yielded another UK hit with "You're the One". The latter song was a Top Ten hit in the US for the Vogues and another song introduced by Clark on this album: "Call Me", was reached the US Top 30 via a cover by Chris Montez.

Another album cut: "Strangers and Lovers", is noteworthy as the song Helen Reddy chose to compete with in the televised talent show she won in 1965, her victory marking her move from Australia to the US.

"The In Crowd" was also recorded in 1965 by Dobie Gray, whose version charted in the top-twenty in the U.S. and top-thirty in the U.K.

    I Know A Place

    by: Paul Weller

i know a place not far from here
where fresh cut grass can fill your hair
and if you want i'll take you there
if you want i'll take you there
you took the light out of the dark
where only love can heal your heart
and if you want i'll make it start
if you want i'll make it start
    this place is a
    half hour away
is that so far to go so near
and further on, we'll find the time
    lose the discontent we fear,
    that we fear
i know a place not far from here
where fresh cut grass will fill you hair
and if you want i'll take you there
if you want i'll take you there
I feel the time we've yet to reach
is not yet within our own belief
and i'm safe - sure that it will come
as it goes on and on
yeah it goes on and on
oh it goes on and on
woah it goes on and on
YEAH it goes on and on and on and on ...
i know a place not far from here
where fresh cut grass can fill your hair
and if you want we'll live out there
if you want we'll live out there
