I Believe (Nikki Yanofsky song)

"I Believe" is a song sung by Canadian jazz-pop singer Nikki Yanofsky. Written by Stephan Moccio and Alan Frew for Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, it was used as the official promotional song for both the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Themes from this song appeared in the main title sequence music, and were used to create cues for use during actual Olympic coverage broadcasts.

Background

Both the English and French versions were recorded in Montreal, Quebec, along with the help of The Montreal Symphony Orchestra and children from the area, who supplied the backing vocals in both languages.

It was noted in the media that the lyric "I believe in the power of you and I" is grammatically incorrect.

This song is also available on Nikki's new album, Nikki, which recently received a gold certification from the Canadian Recording Industry Association.

Reception

It reached number one on the Canadian Hot 100 issue dated February 27, 2010. "I Believe" was the first song by a Canadian singer to top the Canadian Hot 100.

I Believe (Bon Jovi song)

"I Believe" is a hard rock song by American rock band Bon Jovi. Written by Jon Bon Jovi, it was released in September 1993 as the fifth single from their 1992 album, Keep the Faith. The single reached number eleven in the UK and number forty in Australia. But it did not chart in the U.S.

Song structure

The songs starts with fading-in distorted noises generated by guitars and Jon Bon Jovi's voice, until a furious guitar takes place. After the instrumental intro, the voice enters into scene.

This song fits the classical hard rock song structure: intro, verse, bridge, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, solo, second bridge and chorus to end.

Tracks 2, 3 and 4 were recorded live on the New Jersey and Keep the Faith Tours. The dates or locations of the shows aren't available due to their absence from the liner notes.

Live performances

"I Believe" was played extensively during the Keep the Faith Tour (1993) and the I'll Sleep When I'm Dead Tour (1993) and on occasion on the Crush Tour (2000). Since then, it has been barely played and has become one of the rarest songs to be played live. It was played once in Germany during the 2003 Bounce Tour, once in London during the 2008 Lost Highway Tour, and most recently, once in Sydney, Australia during the 2010 Circle Tour. When played live, this song features both Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi at guitar.

Zār

Zār or Zaar (Arabic: زار) (Somali:Saar) (Amharic:Zar) is a religious custom apparently originating in Horn of Africa during the 18th century and later spreading throughout East and North Africa. Zār custom involves the possession of an individual (usually female) by a spirit. It is also observed in Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, southern Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East.

A featured musical instrument in the Zār ritual is the tanbura, a six-string lyre (6-stringed "bowl-lyre"), which, like the Zār practice itself, exists in various forms in an area stretching from East Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. Other instruments include the mangour, a leather belt sewn with many goat hooves, and various percussion instruments.

The Zār cult served as a refuge for women and effeminate men in conservative, Muslim-dominated Sudan.

In Ethiopia, zār also refers to malevolent demons. Many Ethiopian Christians and Muslims believe in these spirits. Among both groups, mental illness is often attributed to zār possession. In Ethiopia, zār possession is more common among women, while among immigrants in the West, men are more commonly afflicted. At the same time, many Ethiopians believe in benevolent, protective spirits, or abdar. While this belief in abdar and zār fits the traditional dualism of good and evil, it is also deeply rooted in superstition.
