CBC TV 8 (Barbados)

CBC-TV 8 (call-sign: 8PX-TV) is a television station owned and operated by public broadcaster Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation in the Caribbean country of Barbados. It is the only legally licensed terrestrial television station in Barbados and is owned by the Government of Barbados; its studios are located in The Pine, Saint Michael. Channel 8 is affiliated with the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS, the Caribbean Media Corporation and its subsidiary the Caribbean Broadcasting Union.

History

CBC TV first signed on in 1964 on channel 3, and became the first West Indian station to air colour broadcasts in 1971. It moved to channel 9 in 1984 and its current channel position, channel 8, in 1991.

Broadcast schedule

Some of CBC TV 8's local programs include Book Talk with Jeff Broomes, Mornin' Barbados every weekday from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. with Cassandra Crawford & Belle Holder and Time to Sing every Sunday afternoon which is a religious programme and the longest-running local program on air.

Chrysler TV-8

The Chrysler TV-8 was an experimental concept tank designed by Chrysler in the 1950s. The tank was intended to be a nuclear-powered medium tank capable of land and amphibious warfare. The design was never mass-produced.

Description

The TV-8 was presented in a proposal by Chrysler Corporation subsequent to the ASTRON meeting. Using an unconventional tank design, the proposed tank located the entire crew, engine and ammunition storage within a pod-shaped turret mounted above a lightweight chassis which could be separated for air shipment. The total weight of the tank was approximately 25 tons, with the turret weighing 15 tons and the chassis weighing 10 tons.

Following review, it was concluded that the TV-8 design did not prove to have significant advantages over conventional tank design to warrant further development, and on 23 April 1956, the TV-8 and three ASTRON proposals were effectively terminated.

Power

The phase I design of the Chrysler TV-8 featured a Chrysler V-8 engine with 300 gross horsepower which was coupled to an electric generator located within the rear turret; the generator powered two electric motors in the front hull, each motor driving either of the two 28-inch wide tracks. Other methods of powering the tank that were later considered include a gas turbine engine drive, a vapour-cycle power plant fueled by hydrocarbons, and a nuclear fission-powered vapour-cycle power plant.

Islamic Broadcast Network

The Islamic Broadcast Network is a local cable television station in Trinidad and Tobago. Known as the IBN, the station is carried on Channel 8 on the Columbus cable system. The station's studios are located at Bamboo Main Road in Valsayn, and its CEO is Inshan Ishmael.

Programming

The station carries several hours of local programming daily. While it focuses on religious programming the station's schedule also includes a considerable amount of current affairs and community / lifestyle programming. Shows such as Breaking Barriers and Point Blank have become immensely popular and have been rated highly in recent surveys.

Controversy

On the 22nd of January 2007, Police Commissioner Trevor Paul claimed that members of the business community contacted him expressing anxiety about the CEO's public call for business to close on the 25th and 26th as a public protest to highlight the spiraling crime situation. Based on four complaints, the contents of which are yet to be made public, the Police Commissioner recommended that the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad & Tobago (TATT) investigate the alleged conduct of the talk show host. Columbus Communications, the cable company on which IBN TV8 airs, said they have “no choice” but to pull the popular talk show Breaking Barriers off the air over complaints by TATT over “questionable content.” The show was hosted by Mr Inshan Ishmael.
