Silas

Silas or Silvanus (Greek: Σίλας / Σιλουανός; fl. 1st century AD) was a leading member of the Early Christian community, who accompanied Paul the Apostle on parts of his first and second missionary journeys.

Name and etymologies

Silas is traditionally assumed to be the Silvanus mentioned in four epistles. Some translations, including the New International Version, call him Silas in the epistles. Paul, Silas and Timothy are listed as co-authors of the two letters to the Thessalonians. Second Corinthians mentions Silas as having preached with Paul and Timothy to the church in Corinth (2 Corinthians 1:19) and Peter's first epistle regards Silas as a 'faithful brother' (1 Peter 5:12).

There is some disagreement over the proper form of his name: he is consistently called "Silas" in Acts, but the Latin Silvanus, which means "of the forest," is always used by Paul and in the First Epistle of Peter; it may be that "Silvanus" is the Romanized version of the original "Silas," or that "Silas" is the Greek nickname for "Silvanus." Silas is thus often identified with Silvanus of the Seventy. Fitzmyer points out that Silas is the Greek version of the Aramaic "Seila," a version of the Hebrew "Saul," which is attested in Palmyrene inscriptions.

A Plea for Purging

A Plea for Purging was a Christian metalcore band based out of Nashville, Tennessee. During their time active, they released four full-length albums on Facedown Records and two EPs. Their final release, The Life & Death of A Plea for Purging, reached #24 on the US Billboard Rock Albums chart and #11 on the Heatseekers chart. Guitarist Blake Martin played on Project 86's record, Wait for the Siren and was a touring member for Haste the Day. Drummer Aaron Eckermann was a touring member for Corpus Christi. Vocalist Andy Atkins was featured on The Crimson Armada's song "Composed of Stone", from their album Conviction.

History

In 2005, Blake Martin and John Wand recruited Justin Lewis, Aaron Eckermann, and Lyle Paschal to join their band, which they had originally called Silas. They later changed it to A Plea for Purging. The band recorded A self-titled EP with this line up, and soon after Justin Lewis quit the band.

The band then asked Andy Atkins (ex-With Blood Comes Beauty) to join the band. The band recorded an EP before signing to Facedown Records. Their Facedown debut was A Critique of Mind and Thought, with this line up, before guitarist Lyle Paschal quit.

Silas Pereira

Paulo Silas do Prado Pereira (born 27 August 1965 in Campinas), simply known as Paulo Silas, is a Brazilian retired footballer who played as a central midfielder, and currently a manager.

Career

During his playing career from 1984 to 2003 he played in Brazil, Portugal, Uruguay, Argentina, Japan and Italy at São Paulo, Sport Club Internacional, Vasco da Gama, Atlético Paranaense, Rio Branco (SP), Ituano, América (MG), Portuguesa, Internacional de Limeira, Sporting Lisbon, San Lorenzo de Almagro, Central Español, Kyoto Purple Sanga, A.C. Cesena and U.C. Sampdoria.

International career

With the Brazilian Youth Team, Silas won the Adidas Golden Ball at 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship, and with the senior team he played 38 matches (34 official), from March 1986 to December 1992, and participated in the 1986 and 1990 FIFA World Cups.

Coaching career

On December 7, 2009 chairman Duda Kroeff introduced the 44-year-old as the new manager of Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense. According to club director Luis Onofre Meira, "Silas is the manager we need for our team - young, but still an expert with many victories in his career. In fact, he was the best manager in 2009. On March 19, 2012 46-year-old Paulo Silas has replaced Bruno Metsu as Al Gharafa new coach.

IOU

An IOU (abbreviated from the phrase "I owe you") is usually an informal document acknowledging debt. An IOU differs from a promissory note in that an IOU is not a negotiable instrument and does not specify repayment terms such as the time of repayment. IOUs usually specify the debtor, the amount owed, and sometimes the creditor. IOUs may be signed or carry distinguishing marks or designs to ensure authenticity. In some cases, IOUs may be redeemable for a specific product or service rather than a quantity of currency, constituting a form of scrip.

California Registered Warrants

Also referred to as "IOUs" by the U.S. state of California, the term "Registered Warrants", which specify a future payment date, is meant to differentiate these IOUs from regular, or “normal” payroll warrants which permit the holder to exchange their warrant for cash immediately. For both types of warrants, redeeming them may be delayed until funds are available. Because of this uncertainty, warrants are not negotiable instruments. Registered Warrants were issued in July 2009 due to a temporary inability of the state of California to redeem its warrants. Warrants are issued as payment to state employees, private businesses, local governments, taxpayers receiving tax refunds, and owners of unclaimed money.

I.O.U. (Freeez song)

"I.O.U." is a song from 1983 by British musical group Freeez, their most successful hit.

The song scored #2 in the UK Singles Chart earlier in 1983 before reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in the U.S., giving them their only chart-topping single on any chart in America. It then became the 20th best-selling single of 1983 in the United Kingdom. "I.O.U." was used for the 1984 breakdance movie, Beat Street. The chorus is often erroneously sung by listeners as "A-E, A-E I-O-U and sometimes Y", referring to the vowels of the alphabet. It is actually "A-E, A-E, I-O-U I sometimes cry" and "A-E, A-E, I-O-U I sometimes lie". The music video for "I.O.U." featured on the video version of Now 1 but the song itself did not appear on the album version.

During 1986 a 12" single was released in the US by the Criminal Records company, with new remixes. Some of these remixes were given a re-release during 1987 in the UK for the Citybeat label as "I.O.U. (The Ultimate Mixes '87)", however, it only scored #23 in the UK Singles Chart this time.

I.O.U. (album)

I.O.U. is the second studio album by guitarist Allan Holdsworth, released in 1982 through Luna Crack Records/I.O.U. Records originally on vinyl; a CD edition was reissued in 1985 through Enigma Records and a remaster in 2008 through Belle Antique. A previous album, Velvet Darkness, was released in 1976 without Holdsworth's consent, therefore making this (in his view) his first official solo release. Furthermore, many tracks from Velvet Darkness were remade and retitled for I.O.U..

Critical reception

John W. Patterson of AllMusic gave I.O.U. a very high 4.5 stars out of five, describing it as "high-quality jazz fusion interplay" and praising Holdsworth's "well-crafted soloing".
