I'm Real (album)

I'm Real is the 57th studio album by American musician James Brown. The album was released in 1988 on Scotti Bros. Records. All of the tracks were produced, written and arranged by Full Force, with the exception of "I'm Real" (co-written by Full Force and Brown) and "It's Your Money $" (written and produced solely by Brown).

"I'm Real" is an R&B song recorded by James Brown. It was co-written and produced by Full Force and appeared on Brown's 1988 album of the same name. Released as a single the same year, it charted #2 R&B. Described in Rolling Stone as "[Brown's] I'm-the-original rapper song", its lyrics assert his primacy and relevance as a performer over and against the many musicians who sample his work.

"I'm Real" is the name of two songs recorded by Jennifer Lopez, both primarily for her second studio album, J.Lo (2001). The original version was released as the album's fourth single; Ja Rule of The Inc. Records (formerly known as Murder Inc. Records) wrote and was featured on a new version of the song, entitled "I'm Real (Murder Remix)", which was featured on a reissue of J.Lo in July 2001, on Lopez's remix album, J to tha L–O! The Remixes (2002), and Ja Rule's third studio album, Pain Is Love (2001).

The original pop and R&B version was well received by music critics who complimented the '80s style, while the remix received mixed reviews for the lyrics. However, both songs have been appreciated for the use of the samples. Singer Ashanti (also on The Inc.) provided backing vocals on the Murder Remix.

The "Murder Inc. Remix" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five non-consecutive weeks, beginning September 8, 2001, and also topped the Hot 100 Airplay chart. The two songs are essentially different songs with the same title. Much controversy followed the song after its release. Two music videos were made for the track, with the first depicting Lopez driving a motorcycle throughout the highway and featuring a dance-break, while the second video features Ja Rule and Irv Gotti.
