HYL or hyl may refer to:
Slug, or land slug, is a common name for any apparently shell-less terrestrial gastropod mollusc. The word slug is also often used as part of the common name of any gastropod mollusc that has no shell, a very reduced shell, or only a small internal shell, particularly sea slugs and semislugs (this is in contrast to the common name snail, which applies to gastropods that have a coiled shell large enough that the animal can fully retract its soft parts into the shell).
Various taxonomic families of land slugs form part of several quite different evolutionary lineages, which also include snails. Thus, the various families of slugs are not closely related, despite a superficial similarity in the overall body form. The shell-less condition has arisen many times independently during the evolutionary past, and thus the category "slug" is emphatically a polyphyletic one.
Of the six orders of Pulmonata, two – the Onchidiacea and Soleolifera – solely comprise slugs. A third family, the Sigmurethra, contains various clades of snails, semi-slugs (i.e. snails whose shells are too small for them to retract fully into) and slugs. The taxonomy of this group is in the process of being revised in light of DNA sequencing. It appears that pulmonates are paraphyletic and basal to the opisthobranchs, which are a terminal branch of the tree. The family Ellobiidae are also polyphyletic.
The gravitational metric system (original french term Système des Méchaniciens) is a non-standard system of units, that does not comply with the International System of Units (SI). It is built on the three base quantities length, time and force with base units metre, second and kilopond respectively. Internationally used abbreviations of the system are MKpS, MKfS or MKS (from french mètre-kilogramme-poids-seconde or mètre-kilogramme-force-seconde). However, the abbreviation MKS is also used for the MKS system of units, which, like the SI, uses mass in kilogram as a base unit.
Nowadays, the mass as a property of an object and its weight, which depends on the gravity of the earth at its position are strictly distinguished. However historically, the kilopond was also called kilogram, and only later the kilogram-mass (todays kilogram) was separated from the kilogram-force (todays kilopond). A kilopond originally referred to the weight of a mass of one kilogram. Since the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the earth can differ, one gets different values for the unit kilopond and its derived units at different locations. To avoid this, the kilopond was first defined at sea-level and a latitude of 45 degrees, since 1902 via the Standard gravity of 9.80665 m/s2.
Nils Hylander (24 October 1904 in Norrköping - 28 July 1970 in Uppsala) was a Swedish botanist and mycologist. From November 1953 to his death he was curator of the Uppsla University Botanical Garden. He was appointed professor in 1967.
Hylander received his doctorate in botany at Uppsala University in June 1943. His thesis “Die Grassameneinkömmlinge Schwedischer Parke, mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Hieracia silvaticiformia.”, deals with the plants that were introduced into Swedish parks and larger gardens in the late 1800s via foreign grass seed, including about 140 different subspecies of hawkweed (Hieracium). One of the objectives was to use these park hawkweeds to identify from which locations in Europe the grass seed originated.
His early interest in mycology gave rise to his 1953 publication, with others, of “Enumeratio Uredinearum Scandinavicarum”, a catalogue of rust fungi, but Hylander's greatest contribution was within Swedish vascular plant taxonomy, where he appears as one of the major figures of the twentieth century.
In philosophy, hyle (/ˈhaɪliː/; from Ancient Greek: ὕλη) refers to matter or stuff. It can also be the material cause underlying a change in Aristotelian philosophy. The Greeks originally had no word for matter in general, as opposed to raw material suitable for some specific purpose or other, so Aristotle adapted the word for "wood" to this purpose. The idea that everything physical is made of the same basic substance holds up well under modern science, although it may be thought of more in terms of energy or matter/energy.
The matter of hyle is closely related to that of substance, in so far as both endure a change in form, or transformation. Aristotle defined primary substance as that which can neither be predicated nor attributed to something else, and he explained the transformation between the four terrestrial elements in terms of an abstract primary matter that underlies each element due to the four combinations of two properties: hot or cold and wet or dry. He stipulated that transformations between opposing elements, where both properties differ, must be analyzed as two discrete steps wherein one of the two properties changes to its contrary while the other remains unchanged, (see essence and hylomorphism).
You couldn't be
You couldn't be me even if you wanted to
Every thing I've been through, You wouldn't know
Live your life
Soaking up, all my sunshine
And smile your whole life
I wouldn't know
Eighteen wheels are rollin'
Eighteen wheels are crushin' me down
Runnin' me down
Cars are crashin'
Cars are crashin' all around me
Runnin' me down
All my days are numbered
All my days are grey
All my skies are covered
All my ends are frayed
You couldn't be
You couldn't be me even if you wanted to
Every thing I've been through, You wouldn't know
Live your life
Soaking up, all my sunshine
And smile your whole life
I wouldn't know
Lightning's crashin'
Thunder's rollin' all around me
Bringin' me down
Stars are fallin'
Fire's lightin' all around me
Burnin' me down
All my days are numbered
All my days are grey
All my skies are covered
All my ends are frayed
You couldn't be
You couldn't be me even if you wanted to
Every thing I've been through, You wouldn't know
Live your life
Soaking up, all my sunshine
And smile your whole life
I wouldn't know
(You wouldn't know)
(You wouldn't know)
(You wouldn't know)
(You wouldn't know)
Feels like I'm fallin' down
Inside a fever risin'
Bury my life deep in the ground
Left my existence lying
So let's go
You couldn't be
You couldn't be me even if you wanted to
Every thing I've been through, You wouldn't know
Live your life
Soaking up, all my sunshine
And smile your whole life
You couldn't be
You couldn't be me even if you wanted to
