Hung Hom

Hung Hom (traditional Chinese: 紅磡; simplified Chinese: 红磡; pinyin: Hóngkàn; Jyutping: hung4 ham3, red cliff) is an area of Kowloon, in Hong Kong, administratively part of the Kowloon City District, with a portion west of the railway in the Yau Tsim Mong District (油尖旺區). Hung Hom serves mainly residential purposes though is mixed with some industrial buildings in the north.

Geography

Hung Hom is in the southeast of the Kowloon Peninsula. It is bordered by Victoria Harbour in the south, King's Park in the west, Hung Hom Bay in the east, No. 12 Hill, Hok Yuen and the valley Lo Lung Hang. in the north.

History

Originally, Hung Hom was much smaller than the present-day context. Hung Hom Bay has been partially reclaimed several times since 1850, expanding the area of Hung Hom as a consequence. Rumsey Rock, formerly located in the bay, was buried in the reclamation process. Later a town was developed eastward parallel to the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock.

Hong Hum was renamed to "Yamashita District" during the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1945. It was one of the few places to be renamed.

Hung Hom Station

Hung Hom Station (Chinese: 紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (Chinese: 九龍車站), is a station on the East Rail Line and West Rail Line in Hong Kong. It is currently Hong Kong's only station serving cross-border trains to Mainland China. Cross-border services to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou call at this station.

The station is located in Yau Tsim Mong District, Kowloon, next to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel's northern entrance. Hung Hom is one of the three Hong Kong ports of entry on the MTR network; the others are Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau.

An interchange for buses (lower level) and public light buses and taxis (upper level) is located outside the station building. The lower-level bus station is situated at the Kowloon entrance of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. Elevated walkways connect the station to the Hong Kong Coliseum, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the residential area of Hung Hom, and tourist attractions in eastern Tsim Sha Tsui; such as the Science Museum, and the Avenue of Stars along Victoria Harbour.
