Hum (hill)

Hum, 583-metre (1,913 ft) high and the most prominent peak of the Laško region, is situated on the Savinja river's left bank. For ages, its foothills have been giving a shelter to the old castle under which thermal water has been pumped from the springs. There is a wide view from Hum on to Laško and its surroundings.

Flora

Hum is the growing place of many plant species, especially subalpine ones, the remains of the Pleistocene vegetation, like the hirsute rhododendron, yellow veronica, primula, mouse-ear hawkweed, Clusius gentian, houseleek, pink, etc. On the sunny side and in light deciduous forests, thermophile plants adapted to dry grounds can be found, for example daphne, smoke tree, holy grass, sessile oak, Solomon's seal, stonecrop, heath and others. Beside these, the following members of the other flore do grow in this region: butcher's broom, the lily of Carniola, black hellebore, honeysuckle, hacquetia, cyclamen, euphorbia, milkwort, helleborine, hart's tongue fern, cranesbill redbrown and many others.

Huma bird

The Huma (Persian: هما‎‎, pronounced Homā, Avestan: Homāio), also Homa, is a mythical bird of Iranian legends and fables, and continuing as a common motif in Sufi and Diwan poetry. Although there are many legends of the creature, common to all is that the bird is said to never alight on the ground, and instead to live its entire life flying invisibly high above the earth.

Huma is the most commonly attested mythical bird in Turkish Diwan poetry.

Onomastics

New Persian Homa derives from Avestan Homāio. In several dialects of the Persian language, the name 'Homa' is additionally applied to the Bearded vulture (lammergeier).

In Turkic mythology, the bird is called Kumay or Umay which was used as a symbol of Çepni, one of the 24 tribal organizations of Oghuz Turks. Umay is the goddess of fertility and virginity in Turkic mythology and Tengriism. In Arabic the bird is called Bulah.

There are numerous folk interpretations of the name, among them that of the Sufi teacher Inayat Khan, who supposed that "in the word Huma, hu represents spirit, and the word mah originates from the Arabic "Ma'a" ماء which means water."

Highly unusual method

Highly unusual methods (also HUM) is a class of contract bridge bidding systems defined by the World Bridge Federation. Usually these are artificial systems that require advance preparation to contend with, and are restricted to the highest levels of tournament play in most locations. These systems are designated by a yellow sticker, and are more regulated than brown sticker conventions.

Hill

A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit (e.g. Box Hill, Surrey).

Terminology

The distinction between a hill and a mountain is unclear and largely subjective, but a hill is universally considered to be less tall and less steep than a mountain. In the United Kingdom, geographers historically regarded mountains as hills greater than 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, which formed the basis of the plot of the 1995 film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In contrast, hillwalkers have tended to regard mountains as peaks 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level: the Oxford English Dictionary also suggests a limit of 2,000 feet (610 m) and Whittow states "Some authorities regard eminences above 600 m (2,000 ft) as mountains, those below being referred to as hills." The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines hill as an upland with a relative height up to 200 m (660 ft).

Hill (Sussex cricketer)

Hill (first name and details unknown) was an English cricketer who played for pre-county club Sussex. He made a single first-class appearance for the team, against 1825, against pre-county club Hampshire.

Hill (crater)

Hill is a small lunar impact crater that is located to the west of the prominent crater Macrobius, near the eastern edge of the Sinus Amoris. This crater was previously designated Macrobius B before being given a name by the IAU. It lies just to the north-northeast of Carmichael, another renamed satellite crater of Macrobius.

This is a circular, bowl-shaped crater with an inner wall that has a relatively high albedo compared to the surrounding terrain. The inner walls are symmetrical in form, and slope gently down to the small floor at the midpoint, a surface about one-fourth the diameter of the crater. This formation is not significantly eroded, and is otherwise indistinguishable from many similar craters on the Moon.
