Tom Roberts

Thomas William "Tom" Roberts (9 March 1856 – 14 September 1931) was a prominent Australian artist and a key member of the Heidelberg School, many of whose paintings are in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.

Life

Born in Dorchester, Dorset, England, where his parents were newspaper editors, Roberts migrated with his family to Australia in 1869 to live with relatives. Settling in Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, he worked as a photographer's assistant through the 1870s while studying art at night under Louis Buvelot and befriending others who were to become prominent artists, notably Frederick McCubbin. He returned to England for three years of full-time art study at the Royal Academy Schools from 1881 to 1884.

Through the 1880s and 1890s he worked in Victoria, in his studio at the famous studio complex of Grosvenor Chambers at 9 Collins Street in Melbourne, and at a number of artists' camps and visits around the colony. He married 35-year-old Elizabeth (Lillie) Williamson in 1896, and they had a son, Caleb. Many of his most famous paintings come from this period. Roberts was an expert maker of picture frames, and during the period 1903–1914, when he painted relatively little, much of his income apparently came from this work.

Tom Roberts (journalist)

Tom Roberts (born ca. 1950) is a retired Canadian radio host and journalist.

Roberts was born in Stanley Mission, Saskatchewan to a northern Cree family who made their living as trappers, fishers, and tour guides. The family's trapline was at Forbes Lake, a remote lake about 50 kilometres north of Otter Lake. Dissatisfied with trapping, Roberts left to pursue studies in La Ronge and Yorkton, eventually finding work as an airfreight radio operator and a Cree–English translator. This experience led to him being offered a job as a broadcast radio announcer by the Department of Northern Saskatchewan. Roberts's Cree-language broadcasts became the first indigenous-language programming in Saskatchewan.

In 1982, premier Grant Devine's government dissolved the Department and cancelled its communications program, and the following year Roberts joined CBC Radio. Roberts became the host of Keewatin Country, a one-hour news magazine broadcast weekdays at noon. He remained in this position until his retirement in 2010.

Tom Roberts (rugby player)

Thomas "Tom" Roberts (1897 – 28 September 1972) was a Welsh international rugby union player who played club rugby for Risca and Newport. He is the only player to have been directly capped from the Risca club.

Life history

Born in Risca, South Wales, in 1897, he made his international debut for Wales as a Lock Forward on 5 February 1921 against Scotland at Swansea, a match which Wales lost by 14 points to 8. Roberts played nine games for Wales between 1921 and 1923, all in the Five Nations Championship. His last game was against Scotland in Cardiff on 3 February 1923 in a game Wales lost 8–11.

He was a collier by occupation before he joined the Newport County Police Force. Roberts died on 28 September 1972 at Feniton, Devon.

Tom Roberts (Ohio politician)

Tom Roberts is an Ohio Democratic politician who formerly served as a member of the Ohio General Assembly. When Ed Orlett resigned from the Ohio House of Representatives in 1986, House Democrats appointed Roberts to serve the remainder of his term. He went on to win election that same November, and again in 1988 and 1990.

In 1992, Roberts was challenged by his predecessor, Ed Orlett, for the Democratic nomination, however Roberts ultimately won the primary election. He went on to win reelection in 1994, and 1996 as well.

By 1998, term limits did not allow Roberts to seek another term in 2000, and he was succeeded by his former aide, Fred Strahorn. He instead decided to run for Montgomery County Commissioner, but lost in a landslide.

Following Rhine McLin's victory to become Mayor of Dayton, Ohio in 2001, her state Senate seat became vacant. As a result, Roberts was appointed to serve the remainder of her term, and went on to win his own full term in 2002. He won reelection in 2006 and served as assistant minority leader in the 127th General Assembly.
