Academic honor code

An academic honor code or honor system is a set of rules or ethical principles governing an academic community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behaviour within that community. The use of an honour code depends on the notion that people (at least within the community) can be trusted to act honorably. Those who are in violation of the honour code can be subject to various sanctions, including expulsion from the institution. Honour codes are used to deter academic dishonesty.

History

The University of Virginia's early years were marked by contentious relations between students and the faculty, which culminated on November 12, 1840, when John Davis, a professor, was shot and mortally wounded in an attempt to quell a disturbance on The Lawn. Davis refused to identify his assailant, stating that an honourable man would step forward on his own. On July 4, 1842, UVA law professor Henry St. George Tucker, Sr., who had replaced Davis on the faculty, proposed that in the future, students sign examinations in the form "I, A.B., do hereby certify on my honour that I have derived no assistance during the time of this examination from any source whatsoever." The idea was a success with the students. The wording of the honour pledge has changed over time, and the definition of what constitutes an honour offense has evolved as well, at times including matters such as smoking, cheating at card games, or insulting ladies. As of 2012, lying, cheating, or stealing are never allowed. Despite the evolution of the system over the years, UVA's Honor System is rare in that it is administered entirely by the University's students. Princeton has also maintained an entirely student-run Honour Code since the beginning of their Code in 1893.

NCIS and its characters were originally introduced in a two-part episode of the CBS television series JAG in April 2003. The show premiered on September 23, 2003, in the United States.

Created by Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, and executive produced by Bellisario, Shane Brennan and Gary Glasberg, NCIS follows Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his Major Case Response Unit based out of the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. Gibbs is joined by Senior Field Agent Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a seasoned investigator, former Presidential protector Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander, seasons 1–2), M.I.T. graduate Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), former N.S.A. analyst and disaster protocol whiz Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham, seasons 11–), Mossad liaison Ziva David (Cote de Pablo, seasons 3–11), and NCIS' Directors Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll, season 5–), and Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly, seasons 3–5), along with Forensic Scientist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), Medical Examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum), and his assistant Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen).

Honor Code (horse)

Honor Code (foaled March 1, 2011) is a Thoroughbred racehorse bred in Kentucky, USA. He was sired by A.P. Indy, son of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and out of mare Weekend Surprise, who was sired by another Triple Crown winner: Secretariat. His damn is Serena's Cat, a granddaughter of Hall of Famer Serena's Song. Honor Code is known for his running style, in which he falls far behind the field early and closes with a rush to the wire.

Honor Code's 2013 two-year-old debut saw him win from 22 lengths behind at Saratoga Race Course. He went on to win the Remsen Stakes and also finished second in the Champagne Stakes.

He was considered a favorite for the 2014 Kentucky Derby, but an injury in March 2014 took him out of contention. Sidelined for much of 2014 by a leg injury, he returned to racing in November 2014 to win a 6 1/2 furlong allowance race/optional claiming race at Aqueduct Race Track.

In March 2015, he returned to graded stakes racing by taking the Gulfstream Park Handicap running against the favorite, Private Zone, who had won the 2014 Grade I Cigar Mile Handicap. On June 6, 2015, Honor Code won the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park. On August 7 2015, Honor Code won the Whitney Handicap by a nose over Liam's Map, with Tonalist third.
