Hominidae

The Hominidae (/hɒˈmɪnd/), also known as great apes or hominids, are a taxonomic family of primates that includes seven extant species in four genera: Pongo, the Bornean and Sumatran orangutan; Gorilla, the eastern and western gorilla; Pan, the common chimpanzee and bonobo; and Homo, the human.

Several revisions in classifying the great apes have caused the use of the term "hominid" to vary over time. Its original meaning referred only to humans (Homo) and their closest relatives. That restrictive meaning has now been largely assumed by the term "hominin", which comprises all members of the human clade after the split from the chimpanzees (Pan). (See below, for a fuller discussion of related and very similar terms, at Terminology.) The current, 21st century, meaning of "hominid" refers to all the great apes including humans. Usage still varies, however, and some scientists and laypersons still use "hominid" in the original restrictive sense; the scholarly literature generally shows the traditional usage until around the turn of the 21st century.

Hominid (disambiguation)

A hominid is any primate in the family Hominidae.

Hominid may also refer to:

  • Hominid (novel)

Hominid is a short novel by Austrian writer Klaus Ebner. Taking place millions of years ago, it is a fictional story of a band of extinct hominids who inhabit Central Africa. Referencing the seven days of biblical Creation, the novel takes place in seven days. As the protagonist Pitar leads his band to civilization, tension arises between the clan leader Costello and his rival Re. Over the course of the story, Pitar invents tools, discovers the use of fire, and falls in love with Maluma. The seventh day marks a turning point in the storyline, as the members of the band separate from one another.

The characters' contemporary language and Pitar's thorough knowledge of modern-day history, philosophy and science add to the grotesque humor of the novel, while his two friends quote classical Roman literature and Chinese sayings. The book was published by Viennese publisher FZA Verlag in October 2008. Between 2008 and 2010, several Austrian and German critics and writers published reviews of the novel.

    Hurricane Streets

    by: Hey Monday

The storm is rushing on me
    Here's the flood flash
I feel so locked and loaded
Let me out, let me out
    Wake up in a wasteland
Where the trees are crashing fast
Make or break or the road explodes
Get out, get out of this town
    Live faster, live stronger
Let us speed up or get blown over
    Time's wasting, how much longer
    Before I get myself free
    Of these hurricane streets?
    Headed for disaster
    Way beyond the fear
In the rear view, watch it all
    Just disappear, disappear
    I don't care where I'm headed
    Anywhere but here
    Won't waste my life
    Can't waste another night
    In this town, this town
    Live faster, live stronger
Let us speed up or get blown over
    Time's wasting, how much longer
    Before I get myself free
    Of these hurricane?
Leaves are blowing down the streets
    Wind crawling up our knees
    Somebody get the keys
Rain is flowing from the sky
But no fear in our eyes, we're ready to fly
    Live faster, live stronger
Let us speed up or get blown over
    Time's wasting, how much longer
    Before I get myself free
    Of these hurricane streets?
    Live faster, live stronger
Let us speed up or get blown over
    Time's wasting, how much longer
    Before I get myself free
    Of these hurricane streets?
