Home directory

A home directory is a file system directory on a multi-user operating system containing files for a given user of the system. The specifics of the home directory (such as its name and location) is defined by the operating system involved; for example, Windows systems between 2000 and 2003 keep home directories in a folder called Documents and Settings.

Description

A user's home directory is intended to contain that user's files; including text documents, music, pictures or videos, etc. It may also include their configuration files of preferred settings for any software they have used there and might have tailored to their liking: web browser bookmarks, favorite desktop wallpaper and themes, passwords to any external services accessed via a given software, etc. The user can install executable software in this directory, but it will only be available to users with permission to this directory. The home directory can be organized further with the use of sub-directories.

The content of a user's home directory is protected by file system permissions, and by default is accessible to all authenticated users and administrators. Any other user that has been granted administrator privileges has authority to access any protected location on the filesystem including other users home directories.

Home is the second album by alternative rock band Deep Blue Something. It was originally released by RainMaker Records in 1994 and re-released on Interscope in 1995.

Condor (ride)

The Condor is the trade name of an amusement ride sold by HUSS of Bremen, Germany. It was debuted at the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair, under the name "Cyclo Tower".

The Condor has 28 steel-framed gondolas, each equipped with a painted fiberglass shell - frequently to resemble the seats to be an actual bird. The seats hold one or two people seated in each, one sitting behind the other if they decide to ride double. It can accommodate approximately 1,700 riders per hour. The automatic doors on the ride are operated by pneumatic air pressure, and are manually opened and closed during necessary points at the beginning/end of the ride cycle. The ride uses a cable and counterweight system within the tower to assist with the raising and lowering of the rotating assembly.

There is a DC induction motor located at the end of each arm responsible for rotating the gondolas, as well as three more on the middle lifting structure used for rotation of the entire assembly and travelling the tower. To start the ride, most Condors use a three-button start system - with three buttons required to be hit at the same time to start the cycle. (The operator in the booth uses his or her thumbs on the two buttons located on the panel, while an attendant in a location around the perimeter must be holding that one as well.)

The Condor (journal)

The Condor: Ornithological Applications is a peer-reviewed quarterly scientific journal covering ornithology. It is the official journal of the Cooper Ornithological Society.

History

The journal was first published in 1899 as the Bulletin of the Cooper Ornithological Club by a group of biologists in California. The journal's scope was regional, covering the western United States. In 1900 the name was changed to The Condor. In 1947, the journal's subtitle was shortened to The Condor, Journal of the Cooper Ornithological Club.

The first editor was Chester Barlow from 1899 to 1902. From 1902 to 1905 it was Walter K. Fisher, and from 1906 to 1939 Joseph Grinnell edited the journal. Charles A. Nace was publisher.

An editorial board was established in 1951 to address increasing submissions to the journal. James King, of Washington State University, instituted a system for external peer review of submissions. King became editor after Alden H. Miller's death in 1965. Miller replaced Grinnell as editor in 1939. King widened the scope of the journal, and by 1966, at least 40% of papers published in The Condor are written by scientists outside the United States.
