Holy Cross Catholic Academy

Holy Cross Catholic Academy High School (or Holy Cross) is a Catholic high school. It was first established in September 1986 to serve western Woodbridge, a community in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. The school has offered instruction to grades seven through nine when it first opened and added a new grade each successive year. The school now serves grades nine through twelve (ages 14 – 18). In 1990, the first group of students graduated from Holy Cross Catholic High School. While the present building was under construction, the school operated out of what is now San Marco Elementary School, located nearby its present location. Staff and students began using the existing facilities in September 1989. Archbishop Robert Clune blessed the building on May 2, 1990.

The school's tenth anniversary was inaugurated with the planting of a tree at the front of the school, which is marked by way of a metal plaque. Holy Cross Catholic High School was converted to a Catholic Academy in 1998 due to pressures from the Ontario government (Mike Harris' Conservative government) to enhance education in technical development.

Holy Cross Catholic Academy is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Amarillo, Texas. It is the only Catholic high school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Amarillo.

Background

Holy Cross was established in 1928 as St. George's College in the basement of Amarillo's Sacred Heart Cathedral. It was an all-boys school at that time. In 1929 the school was renamed Price Memorial College, in honor of a widow's donation to help construct a permanent building for the school. The Christian Brothers staffed the school from 1936 to 1966. In 1966 the school merged with nearby all-girls St. Mary's Academy and became Alamo Catholic High School, a coeducational middle and high school. The school moved to its present location in 1990. It was renamed Holy Cross Catholic Academy in 2000 after a complete renovation of the school.

Athletics

Holy Cross offers students the opportunity to participate in Football (American, 6-Man), Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field, and Golf. The Mustangs have played 6 Man football since the beginning of the program in 2004. Since then, the football team has advanced to the playoffs 2 years, in 2009 and in 2010. David Johnson coached the football team from 2004 to 2010, then Scott Reynolds took over in 2011. The current Athletic Director is Isaac Martinez.

Holy Cross dispute

The Holy Cross dispute occurred in 2001 and 2002 in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, Northern Ireland. During the 30-year conflict known as the Troubles, Ardoyne had become segregated – Ulster Protestants lived in one area and Irish Catholics in another. This left Holy Cross, a Catholic primary school for girls, in the middle of a Protestant area. In June 2001, Protestant loyalists began picketing the school, claiming that Catholics were regularly attacking their homes and denying them access to facilities. For weeks, hundreds of protesters tried to stop the schoolchildren and their parents from walking to school through their area. Some protesters shouted sectarian abuse and threw stones, bricks, fireworks, blast bombs and urine-filled balloons at the schoolchildren and their parents. Hundreds of riot police, backed up by British soldiers, escorted the children and their parents through the protest each day. The "scenes of frightened Catholic schoolgirls running a gauntlet of abuse from loyalist protesters as they walked to school captured world headlines". Death threats were made against the parents and school staff by the Red Hand Defenders, a loyalist paramilitary group. The protest was condemned by both Catholics and Protestants, including politicians. Some likened the protest to child abuse and compared the protesters to American white supremacists in 1950s Alabama.
