Holmen IF

Holmen Idrettsforening is a Norwegian sports club from Holmen in northern Asker, Norway. It has sections for football, handball and cross-country skiing. Its home ground is Holmen idrettspark.

The club was founded in 1918, at that time having sections for football, athletics and ski jumping. More sports were later added to the club, notably ice hockey as Holmen IF was one of the founding members of the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation in 1934, as well as tennis. Another local sports club Hvalstad IF was merged into Holmen IF some time after 1945. In 1997 the tennis section broke away to form Holmen TK, and the same thing happened to the ice hockey section in 1998.

The men's football team will play in the Norwegian Second Division (third tier) in 2014, having won promotion in the 2013 season.

Holmen (company)

Holmen is a Swedish company which bases its business in the forest industry and the pulp and paper industry. Holmen's main products are paperboard for consumer packaging and graphical applications. Printing paper for magazines, supplements, direct mail, directories, books and newspapers. They also produce sawn timber for flooring, window components, furniture or construction.

The current CEO is Henrik Sjölund.

History

Holmen was originally called Mo och Domsjö AB (MoDo), a Swedish company created in 1874. Carl Kempe (1799-1872), a Pomeranian-born merchant, originally partnered with his brother-in-law, but was from 1836 single owner of a sawmill in Mo, at the river Moälven, near Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden. Carl Kempe later established a steam-powered sawmill at Domsjö on Moälven. The latter has been running as an independent company called Domsjö Fabriker since 2000, and in 2011 it was acquired by India's Aditya Birla Group.

The company Mo och Domsjö AB was created in 1874 by Carl Kempe's sons from these holdings, among several other industries controlled by the Kempe family. It was led at various times by the brothers Bernhard (1830-1908), Wilhelm and Frans Kempe (1847-1924) and remained in the control of the Kempe family for most of the next century.

Holmen, Wisconsin

Holmen is a village in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,005 as of the census of 2010. It is part of the La Crosse Metropolitan Area.

History

Holmen was settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1862. It was incorporated as a village on May 7, 1946.

Geography

Holmen contains wooded areas, hills, and bluffs, typical of the Driftless Area, or Coulee Region. The Mississippi River passes just to the southwest of the village.

Holmen is located at 43°57′19″N 91°15′33″W / 43.95528°N 91.25917°W / 43.95528; -91.25917 (43.955330, -91.259132). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.20 square miles (13.47 km²), all of it land. Star Hill is a prominent bluff adjacent to downtown Holmen and is one of the tallest areas of the village. The hill gets its name from a light up star on top of the hill.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,005 people, 3,400 households, and 2,431 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,731.7 inhabitants per square mile (668.6/km²). There were 3,521 housing units at an average density of 677.1 per square mile (261.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 90.4% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 7.0% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
