Holland

Holland is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The name Holland is also frequently used to informally refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is commonly accepted in other countries, but in the Netherlands and particularly in other regions of the country it could be found undesirable or even insulting.

From the 10th to the 16th century, Holland proper was a unified political region within the Holy Roman Empire as a county ruled by the Counts of Holland. By the 17th century, Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the newly independent Dutch Republic.

The area of the former County of Holland roughly coincides with the two current Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland, which together include the Netherlands' three largest cities: the capital city of Amsterdam; Rotterdam, home of Europe's largest port; and the seat of government of The Hague.

Holland (surname)

Holland is a toponomical surname indicative of ancestral origin in the Dutch region of Holland, the Netherlands, or the English region of Holland (Lincolnshire), or the English towns of Upholland (Lancashire) and Holland-on-Sea (Essex). It is also an Anglicized version of Ó hUallacháin (or Houlihan or Holohan) and is a common surname on the [Beara Peninsula]] in southwestern County Cork, Ireland. It is also found in places where Beara immigrants settled, such as Butte, Montana, and southeastern Massachusetts.

Holland (album)

Holland is the 19th studio album by the American rock group The Beach Boys, released in January 1973. It was recorded in Baambrugge, Netherlands over the summer of 1972 using a reconstructed studio sent from California, and with two Brian Wilson tracks rush-recorded in Los Angeles and added to the album at the last minute. The photograph on the album's front cover is an upside down image of the Kromme Waal, a canal that runs through the center of Amsterdam.

Holland included a bonus EP, Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale), a musical fairy tale written by Brian Wilson about a magical transistor radio who appears to a young prince. Narration was provided by the group's manager: Jack Rieley.

Background

Just as Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" was coming to print, the Beach Boys, at manager Jack Rieley's urging, decided to pack up and record their next album in the Netherlands. They felt the change of scenery would make for some inspirational sessions, and perhaps even snap former leader Brian Wilson out of his deep depression.

Beach 90th Street (IND Rockaway Line)

Beach 90th Street, sometimes called Beach 90th Street – Holland, is a station on the IND Rockaway Line of the New York City Subway. It is served by the S (Rockaway Park Shuttle) at all times and ten daily rush-hour only A trains.

History

The "Holland" designation refers to Michael P. Holland, one of the early developers of the area in which the station was located. It was originally built by the Long Island Rail Road at Holland Avenue and Beach 92nd Street between May and June 1880 along the Rockaway Beach Branch for the nearby Holland Hotel, and was also a trolley stop of the Ocean Electric Railway. It was rebuilt in 1899, and again in 1914 with a baggage storage facility. Like much of the Rockaway Beach Branch and part of the former Far Rockaway Branch, it was closed in 1941 and rebuilt as an elevated station in 1942, only to be purchased by the New York City Transit Authority on October 3, 1955 and reopened as a subway station on June 28, 1956.

After Hurricane Sandy hit and destroyed the long stretch of the IND Rockaway Line, this was a terminal of the temporary H shuttle until May 30, 2013, when the A and Rockaway Park Shuttle trains were restored to the Rockaways. H trains terminated on the northbound track, because the Rockaway Park Shuttle was not in operation and A service was cut to Howard Beach – JFK Airport.
