Hohe Wand

Hohe Wand is a municipality in the district of Wiener Neustadt-Land in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. In this municipality there are four villages: Stollhof, Maiersdorf, Gaaden and Netting.

Hohe Wand (mountain)

The Hohe Wand is a mountain ridge in Lower Austria and is part of the Gutenstein Alps. It lies west of Steinfeld in the Vienna Basin; its highest peak (the Plackles) attains a height of 1,132 m. It is one of Vienna's Hausberge.

General

It derives its name, which means "High Wall", from the steep rock faces on its south and southeast side. The high plateau is about 8 km long and stretches from the area of the Plackles peak in the southwest to the so-called Wandeck in the northeast.

The plateau of the Hohe Wand may be accessed over a toll road built in 1931/32 that branches off the road between Stollhof and Maiersdorf. From 1965 until it was dismantled in 1994 there was also a double chairlift from Grünbach to the Plackles summit. Easy, but little used, hiking trails runs from the Dürnbach valley, from Grünbach and from the "rear side", from Miesenbach, up the mountain. Most of the climbs on the southern and southeastern sides are more challenging, requiring sure-footedness and, in places a head for heights. In this area are most of the over 700 climbing routes of all levels of difficulty; there are also numerous Klettersteigs.

Wand

A wand (sometimes magic wand) is a thin, hand-held stick or rod made of wood, stone, ivory, or metals like gold or silver. Generally, in modern language, wands are ceremonial and/or have associations with magic but there have been other uses, all stemming from the original meaning as a synonym of rod and virge, both of which had a similar development. A stick giving length and leverage is perhaps the earliest and simplest of tools. Long versions of the magic wand are usually styled in forms of staves or scepters, often with designs or an orb of a gemstone forged on the top.

Symbolism

In ecclesiastical and formal government ceremonial, special officials may carry a wand of office or staff of office representing their power. Compare in this context the function of the ceremonial mace, the sceptre, and the staff of office. Its age may be even greater, as Stone Age cave paintings show figures holding sticks, which may be symbolic representations of their power.

The magic wand can also symbolize "tool"-ness. A wand isn't an actual physical tool (e.g. a gun, hammer, screwdriver, etc.) with practical physical functions, but it can aid the user to manipulate the world around them. Following an occult definition of magic— "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will"— the wand represents the means by which the Will causes the conformity.

Wand (band)

Wand is an American psychedelic rock from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2013. The band consists of Cory Hanson (vocals, guitar), Lee Landey (bass) and Evan Burrows (drums).

To date, the band has released three studio albums in quick succession, Ganglion Reef (2014), Golem (2015) and 1000 Days (2015).

History

Formation and Ganglion Reef (2013-2014)

Prior to forming Wand, vocalist and guitarist Cory Hanson performed with Mikal Cronin and the bands, together PANGEA and Meatbodies. Working on the songs that would become the band's debut album, Ganglion Reef, Hanson subsequently re-recorded his material after forming Wand with former art school classmates Lee Landey and Evan Burrows: "[I] found a band, and we re-recorded everything and then just started playing... really intensely.” Regarding the band's name, Hanson noted: "My girlfriend actually thought of the name. We wanted a name that was kind of empty, like a wand is more of an idea, like a magical tool; it’s a means, a vessel to execute a superhuman thing."

Wand (Wall)

Wand (Wall) is an oil painting by Gerhard Richter executed in 1994. It was in Richter's private collection for over 15 years before he sold it to the Wako Works of Art gallery in Tokyo in 2010. It was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 12 February 2014 for £17,442,500.
